I was just reading the letter from my child's director where he mentioned many of the children CI helps are "stateless". Are our Karen children being able to get an education in this type of non-citizen situation? How is CI helping them and how can we as sponsors help? I am especially concerned about the child slavery aspect- will enrollment in Compassion project/ church help keep them safe? A little google search on this topic gave me a lot of questions of concern.... thanks.

Theresa, I visited the Thai office a few years ago and talked to the country director at the time about this issue. You may be aware that for a long time, Burmese refugees have fled Myanmar across the border into Thailand. They are not Thai citizens and are therefore at a greater risk of exploitation in Thailand. The country office has this issue as one of their priorities to help protect these children from exploitation and help them to acquire the proper paperwork to be in Thailand legally. This will also enable them to attend school in the short term and in the long term to be employed and released from poverty. In cases, where children are not able to attend school, we always provide supplementary education at the student center to fill in the gaps until they can hopefully get back into school again. I am not sure what you were reading online but I hope this answers your question.
