I would look over our FAQ page here. The questions I mentioned may be a bit more in depth than what you may be hearing :). I think it's important for anyone who is representing Compassion to remember that the heart of this ministry is the Lord. He is the one releasing children from poverty and He is the one changing hearts. We are His hands and feet.
As I said, I have not volunteered with Compassion. So, anyone who has volunteered or who has some advice is encouraged to please jump in and help Laura out!

Hi Laura. I've been a Volunteer Advocate for over 8 years and the best advice I can give you is to just be yourself. Talk about your own experience as a sponsor. Talk to people about writing letters and the things you and your child discuss. Tell them about pictures or drawings that your child has sent you. And encourage letter writing! My wife and I have had opportunities to meet several Graduates as they speak at events and festivals, here in the States. They tell us that the letter writing makes a huge difference for the kids. Unfortunately, nearly 4 out 10 children don't get letters from their sponsors. So, that's something we strongly emphasize when we talk to new sponsors.
Also, don't sweat the questions. As Katherine mentioned, the FAQ page is a great place to start, but there will be others at the event, people like myself or the Event Coordinator, who will have answers to some of the tougher questions. Simply direct the questioner to whoever that may be.
Thank you for volunteering! It's our volunteers that help Compassion to be such an effective ministry.
