I am sponsoring a child in Ghana and he is four years old. I was wondering if they are able to trace or write yet at this age in that country. I want to ask in a letter for the child to trace his name or something like that. But don't want to make anyone feel bad if they can not do it.

My son is the same age, so this is where I got the idea at. Since anytime I have received photos it's of someone else's drawing and not the child's. So just and idea I have

Hi Britni! It really depends on when the child starts school and their developmental support prior to that. Sometimes children are not able to start school until they begin the Compassion program which may happen up to nine years old. This would obviously delay their development compared with children here in the US who almost always start preschool around age four and often are taught by their parents in the very basics of reading and writing before that. We do have a program for mothers and babies that teaches caregivers to care for their children and support healthy development. This program helps these children get a better start in life than others, and feeds directly into our sponsorship program.

While most children can at least scribble, in some cases children in our programs are able to trace and write. Another consideration is that children are often able to do more in real life than they may feel comfortable doing for their sponsor. They so desperately want to please their sponsors that they may not try writing in a letter until they feel really confident in the task. It looks like your child started the program last year and is currently in preschool. You are welcome to ask him to trace his name, just please keep in mind that he may not be able to or may not feel confident doing so for his sponsor right away. That said, each child will always contribute ideas and drawings to each letter so you will receive that at the very least.
