I started sponsering two girls in mid July. I picked them because they were longest waiting, and because they're birthday's are in September. I sent a birthday gift and letter imediantly. Will they get their gifts in September? I know birthday's aren't as big of a deal in other countries, but I was still hoping.

Compassion officially recommends 3 months in advance because it can take that long, but my personal experience has been closer to 8 weeks for receipt. Some people get concerned that the gift is given early or late, but the children are usually just incredibly happy to have something and don't mind a time lag. When I sponsored my first girl I sponsored her after her birthday but sent a gift anyway. She wrote me a beautiful letter about how grateful she was to have corn for her birthday. Even if the gift doesn't arrive at the right time they'll just be happy to show care for them, especially by writing to them. :)

It's really hard to say, but there's a good chance a gift sent in mid-July would arrive on time, or soon after, just no guarantee.  Like Andrea said they recommend 2-3 months in advance, because it can take that long, but it doesn't always.
I think that even if it doesn't arrive on time, it'd arrive pretty close to their birthdays, and no matter WHEN they get it, they'll be thrilled!

I have a penchant for sponsoring kids whose birthday is right around the corner, it seems, and I just write them a birthday note saying that I'm sending them something so they can get a birthday gift but because it takes so long for things to get from my house to them, it might not get there right on time.
