I sent my sponsored child Robson $60.00 US dollars for his birthday. I read up on his community first and knew this amount would definitely be enough to get him many needed and wanted items.I have to say I was very surprised to find out he got one outfit with shoes and a birthday cake! That's it! I even had this confirmed with Compassion International . I'm sorry but this doesn't sit right with me. Where did his money go? It was meant to give him a wonderful day. I'm really sad about this.I'm sad for Robson.

I can relate. In most 3rd world countries the purchasing power of US dollars there is usually quadrupled. That is, $60 there will buy what $240 will buy here in the states.
I always take the explanations about this with a grain of salt.

Hi Crystal! I am so sorry for the disappointment caused by this letter from Robson regarding his special gift. I do see that we sent an inquiry to our office to check on how that gift was used since it seemed that the amount could have purchased more than he wrote about. Robson did purchase shoes for 450  Ethiopia Birr (about $16 USD), a sweater and pair of pants for 600 Birr (about $21 USD) and another 420 Birr on a birthday ceremony (about $15 USD), which would include more than just a birthday cake. It sounds like this made his day very special indeed actually! From the photo, it does look like the shoes and outfit he purchased are very nice and may have cost more than he may normally be able to afford. Compassion does also utilize 10% of gift money to cover the process and delivery costs involved with giving gifts to the children.

Thank you for this information with the prices of items. My last reply was before I saw this! Seeing what these items actually cost now it makes more sense. I guess when I researched I thought he would be able to get so much more. As long as his day was special that's the main thing. Thank you.
