My child is blind. Do you have any suggestions for things I can send along with my letters that will bring her happiness since she cannot see pictures, coloring sheets, etc. ?

Hi Rebekah! I'm so grateful for the heart you have for the children in need who also have disabilities. Writing to and fostering a relationship with a child without sight is not easy, but i believe that God has equipped you with all that you need to minister to your children. With our new letter writing system, everything will be scanned and sent to your child, with a few exceptions, so I don't recommend sending any braille. However, pop-up cards, musical cards, stickers and bookmarks will all be sent physically! You may even be able to find some of those items with braille on them. Please keep in mind that the braille would not be translated though. I also encourage you to talk about things like colors. Encourage their curiosity! You can help your children understand color by relating it to her other senses and attaching emotions and feeling to color. You could describe red as a hot, loud color; white as smooth and quiet; blue as sad or calm. You could even describe yellow as being buttery and rich, like sunshine on your face! Those are just some suggestions on what to write. Of course, the things your children want to hear the most is what any child wants. They want to hear that they are loved by you and by God, that they are unique and have a purpose in life. I hope this help you to connect and grow loving relationships with your girls! God bless you.

I think it will be great gift to send a birthday or Christmas musical cards since thes will be hand delivered. It would also buy one of those cards you can record your voice or record a nice calm Christian music and send it to your child.

Christina, This is the 2nd time this week I read in this forum that we can now send pop-up cards. That is nice to know. I really wish Compassion would utilize a way to keep all of their sponsors updated, or am I missing something? Just seems to me that a sponsor shouldn't have to stumble across information like the fact that pop-up cards are now considered acceptable. I think if pop-up cards are an addition to list of 3 other items that sponsors can send now, all sponsors should know.

I was also told musical cards with lights can be physically sent too. I bought a birthday card with lights for my child who lives in a area with no electricity.

Beth, I'm so sorry that you've heard conflicting information regarding pop-up cards. Yes, they can be sent. You're absolutely right that we ought to be very sure that all of our sponsors are made aware of the updates and changes. Thank you so much for your feedback. Have a great weekend!

I have seen some stickers or bookmarks that have different textures. Some are fuzzy, smooth, glittery/rough etc. That might be cool for your child to be able to feel them. I don't know if we're allowed to send puffy stickers (does anyone know?) but she might like that too. Maybe you could keep an eye out for textured items at craft and book stores.

Great ideas, Rachel, thank you for sharing! The stickers would have to be flat, so no puffy ones.

Thanks Haley! I was wondering another thing- I have a musical card I want to send to my child Wan (Pattarakul) for her birthday but I'm not sure if it is allowed. It is about 8 in tall x 5 in wide x 1 cm thickness with strings on top. When you pull the tab it plays music and the strings on top spin. The back also opens as a traditional card. Would this be allowed or is it too thick or maybe a problem with the strings?

Hi Rachel! The only thing on the card that would keep it from going through would be the strings on top. It's an adorable card and looks like it would bring a lot of giggles, but it sadly wouldn't be able to be sent :(. I hope you can find another fun musical card to send to Wan, and I do want to thank you for asking and for wanting to bless her with such a fun gift for her special day!

That's ok, I sort of thought so after buying it but figured I ought to ask anyway. I just returned it and got something else!  :-)

I was wondering, I recently sent a musical card and 5 sticker sheets to my correspondent child. I saw that the card was scanned but nothing else was. My question is:
1) If the card was scanned, does that mean it is not being physically sent to the child?
2) If the stickers were not scanned, does that mean they were not sent?

Thank you so much! I am still trying to figure out all the details of the system!

Rachel, we scanned your card so that we could get the words on it translated for you :). The card  and your sticker sheet are still going to be physically mailed to your kiddo. Thank you so much for sending such sweet gifts to your child. I know they will be well received and bring joy to your child's face!
