I found a funny little children's book about pirates small enough to send with a letter and bought one each for my correspondent boys in Kenya and India. I also bought pirate stickers to put on the letters. I have them all ready to send but it occurred to me that it might not be culturally appropriate - especially for my Kenyan correspondent who lives in a coastal area right next to Somalia. Will they be OK to send?

Philippa, thank you for wanting to be respectful and sensitive to their culture and the current events happening in Somalia. Because of the area that your children in Kenya live, I would discourage sending items that have pirates because piracy does still exist in that region and is linked to violence in those areas. Also, many of the items I was looking up online related to children's books and pirate stories, most were carrying swords. If you did send these items through, our country staff might not deliver them to your children if they found it inappropriate due to the piracy and violent activity that takes place there currently. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but thank you so much for being careful about what you send and there are many other fun topics and themes that you're welcome to send to your child in the form of pages, activities, and stickers.
