Burkina Faso Crisis ... I sponsor a child in Burkina Faso and I received a letter today telling me there is a crisis and that even among the compassion centers, children are experiencing health problems. This concerns me quite a bit, I was under the impression that by my sponsoring a child, that child and their family will be safe and health looked after. Now I am concerned where my money is actually going. Is it to help my child have a better life both spiritually and in health ?

Hello, Klara! Thank you so much for reaching out and for your concern for your sponsored child! Your sponsorship does provide your child with medical care and assistance, including hygiene training, medical checkups, and vaccines. However, because of the surrounding poverty and the poverty that all of the children in our program live in, regrettably, there's no way for us to completely eradicate sickness in those areas. Your child is certainly being looked after and cared for!

Yes, we received a letter from our child in Burkina Faso at the beginning of the year, saying he'd had a health checkup and it was discovered he has malaria. He was given a mosquito net and whatever else he needed. We were quite concerned for him, praying, and writing to ask how he is doing. We received a letter from him March 16, dated February 14 (quicker than usual turnaround), saying he is in good health. Apparently he is receiving the care he needs.  We're grateful to Compassion for taking care of our little boy in BF.

I received several letters last fall with health checkups, and two or three were battling malaria. It is evidently fairly common in some areas of the world.
