What a fun idea , Crystal! As far as I know, we can't add full page attachments to our online letters, but I'd love to hear Compassion's official response, too!

I've thought about uploading a small coloring page as a single horizontal picture as a work around. A single horizontal picture is the largest way to attach a photo that I've found through the online system.

Love that Compassion makes it so easy for us to reach out to our kids!! And I actually love sending pics to my kids using the online system, too! Have fun writing to yours!

Hi Kristen,
I would be very grateful if you would copy and paste the new guidelines. I don't see them on Compassion's website yet and it sounds like the new guidelines will go into effect in just a few weeks.
I am a bit concerned. I have multiple children and I have bought paper items for birthday and Christmas gifts (years in advance!). I have spent money on paper items and now I am concerned that they will no longer meet the guidelines.
Thank you so very much!

Carol, I have copied and pasted the post from Facebook. I'm assuming since it was shared there that it's ok to share here as well :)

"............Beginning April 11, 2016, all original letters between sponsors and children will be digitally scanned, translated and emailed. Children will receive high quality prints of your letters. You will receive letters by email and, if you choose, a scanned printout by postal mail. Letters will also be stored in your MyAccount.

This increases the letter delivery process by up to 50 percent, allows Compassion to increase the number of sponsored children without slowing down our letter delivery, and costs less money to implement—saving ministry funds and using them more effectively.

In the new letter-writing process, Compassion will deliver extremely high quality scans of your letters directly to your child’s country office. New printers installed in each field office print your letter, which will be forwarded to your child’s center for delivery. Compassion has implemented printing and paper standards in each of our offices, and monitors these processes for quality. This entire process is about 50 percent faster than sending letters via mail.

In order to facilitate the digital letter delivery process, Compassion has made the following changes to our letter writing policy:

- All of your correspondence should include a personal letter to your child. Enclosures received without a personal letter cannot be sent along to your sponsored child.

- Your letter and any enclosures should be completely flat and made of paper.

- Letters and small, flat paper gift items should be no larger than 8.5” x 11".

- Total number of items (including stationery) should not exceed six sheets of paper, including your letter to your child.

- If items are in excess of six sheets, we will make every effort to donate the item to a local children’s charity. Items that cannot be donated will be discarded.

Compassion provides translation for the letter you send to your sponsored child up to the maximum of six sheets per letter. The “six sheets” rule is replacing the 1/4” thick rule that has been our standard in the past. Please note, only the following items will be physically delivered to your child, up to a maximum of six sheets.

- Stickers (flat, not puffy or foam)
- Bookmarks
- Musical greeting cards

Some flat paper items enclosed with your letter will be scanned and sent electronically with your letter. The following scan-friendly items will be scanned first, digitally sent to your child’s country office for printing, and then delivered to your child:

- Letters
- Photos
- Postcards
- Greeting cards
- Coloring pages
- Paper crafts

Your child will not receive original copies of items in the list above. Original items are not kept by Compassion and are not returned to sponsors. If you choose to send any of the above items to your child, you must include a letter in order to ensure proper delivery............"

This conversation seems very out of order for me reading it...  so I'm adding this on just in case it's not been said yet, but if it has, then sorry for making you read it twice haha.

1. The musical cards, bookmarks, and stickers that are going to be sent as originals will NOT be translated.  Just something to take into consideration when sending.  You'll want to send ones with pictures only, send them to English speaking kids, or send them in your child's language.

2. Pop-up cards will not be allowed, even though they are completely flat when you fold them, they are not when you open them up and can't be scanned.

3. Laminated stuff won't go through any more EXCEPT bookmarks because they are being sent not-scanned anyways.

I'd love to send attachments too, hopefully one day.  We can send colouring page attachments in Canada from the selection they have.
For now I have added them instead of a photo (and also mazes, sudokus etc) in the upload image section so the kid can colour something small right on the letter :)

Hi Crystal! Regrettably, we aren't able to attach full-sized coloring pages to online letters right now. The idea was suggested to us recently, which we will absolutely keep in our suggestion box! Connie's idea is a pretty great one if you'd like to send something small for your child to color with the online letter. For now, sending coloring pages through the mail is the only way to get the full sized pages to your child. Like Kristen mentioned, all attachments such as coloring pages will need to have a letter accompanying them in order to be sent beginning April 11. Thank you so much for sending your sweet kiddo lots of encouragement with your letters! She will be so happy to receive your letters and a few coloring pages from you too :).

The origami can be sent if it's flat I think but nothing pop-up.  All photos Will be scanned, in the original size on high quality paper that has some gloss to it.  Regular greeting cards will be scanned and sent flat, it was discussed a lot in the facebook group.  This is because the things the musical cards/bookmarks/stickers cannot be translated anymore and since so many greeting cards go through, it would be a problem if they weren't translated either.  The sticker backgrounds I would suggest attaching to the sticker sheets.  I think they'd go through attached.  You could glue the sticker sheet to the back of the backdrop I'd think.  The cards will be printed out on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper but the kids have access to scissors at the project and could probably cut them out of that themselves.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Attach PDFs to letters.

Okay, I know you just had a big change happen in the letter writing, but I thought that since thoae changes are happening and Conpassion will be saving money with it, maybe you could implement this sometime. With the letters that we send online, we could attach up to 5 Additional pages (making 6) of PDF files or something. That way we could send coloring pages and stuff online.

Thank you!
