I was browsing through some of the unsponsored children on the web site. The location of one of the student centers is listed as Colonia Alvarado, Zona 5, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. It is listed as an area with a population of 200,000, yet I've found it impossible to figure out just where this would be. I can't find any such town, and even the largest town in that department isn't listed as being that large. Where is this student center located?

I know nothing of. Guatemala, but I think you've already discovered the city of Huehuetenango which is about half that size. If I had to guess, the 200,000 figure is probably "greater Huehuetenango", pulling in some of the surrounding sprawl. The first part is probably a section of the city or a nearby village... what everybody knows it as even if it is not clearly denoted on a map. That seems to be how it is with some of my kids, or even in some places I have lived myself. : )

Just messing around a bit, and Zone 5 is the southeast side of the city.

True, we have areas of our town that we use informal names for; everyone locally knows which part of town they are, but I don't think the names appear on maps.

Hi Beth! I completely understand your confusion with finding this location. It is often hard to find exactly where some children are, especially if they live in a more rural area or an area that is not listed on a map. Jennifer makes a very good point :). It may also be possibly that we have the location of this program listed incorrectly. If you can provide the child's number or project number of who you were looking at, I'd be happy to show you where they are :).

Hey Beth! The center is in Huehuetenango, which is a large enough city to have about 200,000 people in it these days. Think of Colonia Alvarado as a small neighborhood within Huehuetenango :). If you look up Huehuetenango up in Google Maps, you can actually see the different zones of the city too!
