My family and I sponsored a boy last year at which point we were told his birthday was in August of 2011. We received an update on him a year later and now his birthday is May of 2008, can anyone tell my why there's such a drastic difference?

Hi Jennifer!

I know this must have been confusing when you saw this update. I'm happy to explain why the difference in Kishor's birthday and age all of a sudden.

When children are registered into our program, the parents often times don’t know the exact birth date of their child as birthday’s are not as important in other cultures as they are here in the US. It’s also likely that his parents didn’t have his birth certificate when they came to the center to register him. This is common, especially in families with more than one child. Many children don’t make it to their fifth birthday in impoverished countries and so the birthday is not held as valuable because what’s important is seeing to it that the child makes it through the first few years of life. We put in a birth date for the child as closely estimated as we can and if we find more information on the child later, we’ll then update his profile. Our staff who enter the child’s information are locals to that community. Because these children have grown up in impoverished conditions and are often times malnourished when they first come to our center, it can be difficult to estimate an accurate age by size or looks in maturity. For these varying reasons, the information might not be 100% accurate for the child but it’s the best information our staff was able to provide when the child was registered.

East India realized that when Kishor was registered, the incorrect birthday was entered for him because on May 3rd, 2016, the staff were able to recover his school records showing his correct birthday of May 8th, 2008. This is his most accurate birth date. They also informed us that he's repeating grade 3 again because he had weak academic performance and want to help him improve and work on third grade once more before advancing him on. I hope this clarifies the confusion and concern. We want to keep our sponsors informed at all times and updated on the records we have for your child. Our staff found this information and they updated it in our system so that it was correct for you.
