Child first learning that they have a sponsor.

My husband and I sponsored another child last Thursday and two more on Saturday. Do you have any idea how much time passes before the children learn that they have been sponsored? Do they also learn our names and our country at that time? One of these children has been waiting nearly two years for a sponsor and is already 18 years old. As far as I can tell he is also the last in his center to not have a sponsor. I can't imagine how this has made him feel. Another, but younger, one has waited 800 days!

I have this same question. I sponsored a child at the beginning of this month that had been waiting 444 days. The child was the longest waiting child that showed up online... I wonder why those children that you (Pamela) sponsored that have been waiting even longer didn't show up for me??? Pamela, how do you know your 18 year old child was the last in his center to be sponsored? Compassion staff, I would like to know when my new child knows she now has a sponsor.... 444 days is such a long time. Could you please tell me if my Ecuador child (child number EC051900210) knows she has been sponsored? When does the child start receiving the education, healthcare, etc. that the sponsorship brings? My sponsor number is 00915899. Thank you!

Oh, also....Compassion will answer this better than I can, but I believe that the child you sponsor has probably already been receiving services/care despite not yet having a sponsor.  It's all good.  We have been sponsoring with Compassion for about 15 years.  Before that I had a good friend who had sponsored several children and had been on trips to visit them.  He talked and talked and talked about the experience and encouraged me to sponsor too.  I don't understand it all--like how children can start being involved at the center before they have a sponsor-- but I trust Compassion.  I am convinced about their integrity.

All children in the program (on the website) receive the benefits/care already through the Unsponsored Kids fund, which is funded by generous donations specified for that fund.  This helps out until the child is sponsored.  Once the child is sponsored, the sponsor takes over paying for that particular child and the unsponsored kids fund can be freed up to help other kids.

 The reason that the child may not have shown up before on the website is that the child's packet may have been available elsewhere.  Not all kids show up on the website as some have their packets available at events like concerts and stuff.  If the packet was on the website and at a concert at the same time they'd run into the issue of more than one sponsor picking the same kid at once, so the kids are removed from the website while their packets are out.

Also, while Compassion is working on a global system, that's a new upgrade in the works.  As it has been, some kids packets are on other countries websites (Like Compassion Canada) for several months before being transferred to the main site, so the child waiting 800 days may have been on another site, or at an event. Or perhaps the child left Compassion for a few years and then came back and reenrolled (When this happens it shows how long since they were last sponsored before they left).

There are actually many more kids enrolled that need sponsors than just those on the website, probably more NOT on the site than on it,though there are a lot more on it now than there used to be.   Hope that helps :)

Traci,
As I looked at the children I wrote down the names of their Compassion Centers, then I searched by Center.  When I searched for the older boy's center, no other children came up.  The reason that I was doing it this way in the first place is that my husband and I already sponsor a few children.  In case we would ever be able to afford to go on a Compassion trip, we thought it might be helpful if we sponsored children at the same center, or at least the same country.  Our children are quite spread out.
Like you, I also found that the "longest waiting list" changed from time to time.  I asked Compassion about this, but I didn't really understand the answer.  I imagine that it's all quite complicated -- the children are from all over, and the sponsors also are from all over the world.  Some children are being sponsored at events, others online.  I don't understand it all, but Compassion has been doing this for a long time.  I trust they know what they're doing. Thanks for sponsoring.  Is this your first?  Enjoy the adventure!

Thanks for your reply Pamela. My new child is my 4th child I have sponsored through Compassion.  I am currently sponsoring 3 children, but my 20 year old boy from India will sadly be missed in a couple days when Compassion has to pull out of India. I trust Compassion as well and even though my new girl may not have been the longest waiting child after all, I believe God chose her specifically for me! Blessings to you and your husband and your sponsored children. :)

I too have sponsored a child in India. Her packet was put into my hands at a Beth Moore event. How could we have known how short a time we had? Now another child has been given into my hands by compassion. I wonder how they selected him? Oddly, before I knew who was picked, I downloaded a Spanish tutorial app. He is from Mexico. God knew

Thank you!  Yes, I believe that God chose your new girl for you and maybe He keeps us from seeing those other 800 day kids in order to direct us to the right one for us!
We too are losing our boy from India this week!  He is 14 and we have sponsored him for about 7 years.  What a heart breaking situation, but good to know that our God is great and that all 147,000 children being impacted are cared for by Him!  So sad that you're boy came so close but won't get to complete the program!  We have yet to see a child finish the program, but one day...Lord willing.  :)

When kids are out at events, they are pulled off the website. Children sent out to events have "expiration dates" -- If they are not sponsored by that date,  then they are either sent out to a different event, or they are put back on the website. But they are "Waiting time" continues to increment even when not on the website to be sponsored.

Hi all! Great questions! Typically the country office is made aware that the child has a new sponsor within that same week. As far as when your child knows, that could vary by project, but it is good news that they want to share as quickly as they can!

Hi Haley! I posted my post just now to another sponsor above, but scrolled down and saw this reply , so will repeat to you;
I was given my child from India's packet by the Lord ( a compassion rep) at a Beth Moore event. Thank God we communicated so much in the short time we were able (3years), not knowing the door to India would close. Compassion gave me a little boy from Mexico. I had just downloaded a Spanish speaking app. and was searching for an older girl from Mexico! How do the compassion staff select a child for a sponsor? Thank you

Wow, Reva! God is so good! I wish I could say that we have superhuman capabilities and were able to read your mind about a child you might like to sponsor, but really we just say a prayer and search for a child in our system. It sounds like God sent you just the right child as a result. :)
