I just started sponsoring a little girl from El Salvador. I was looking through the Gift Catalog for something to send her and her family for Christmas. How do I know what they need or what is most appropriate? Do they raise animals? Do they plant a garden? Does the mom need literacy help? Etc.

Hi Sharon! When you purchase something from the catalog, that is not something for your specific child. To send your child a gift, you can send a monetary child gift, family gift, or birthday gift. The family then meets with staff and decides how best to use the money!
The catalog gifts go to families that do need these specific items.

Thank you, Kristen. I have sent a monetary Christmas gift for my sponsored child, but I didn't see how to send a financial gift to her family

Hi Sharon! Kristen's answer was very helpful :). The gifts provided through the Gifts of Compassion Catalog look first to provide for children and families with the greatest need. You are not able to specify that your sponsored child or their family receive a gift directly through these funds because often times the gifts that we feel would be helpful is not what these families need or would choose for themselves. For example, if you buy chickens for a family that lives where they do not have land for these chickens, or where they have a lot of wild animals, your gift is much less beneficial than intended. If you would like to give a specific gift to your child only or their family, then we would encourage you to give a monetary gift to the child or family.

In order to send a monetary gift to your child or their family, log in to your "My Account" on Compassion's website and click the "Additional Giving" button in the left column. Select the type of gift that you would like to send (Child Gift or Family Gift) by selecting an amount in the appropriate drop-down box next to your child's name and proceed from there. When your child and their family receive this gift, a Compassion staff member will assist them in purchasing a gift for your child. If you would like to request that the funds be used in a specific way, there is an option to do that at the bottom of the checkout screen by clicking the link that says "I have additional instructions regarding this donation." Please know that the use of the gift is ultimately up to the family, so if they have an immediate need, they may use the gift to help meet that need. Thank you so much for your generous heart to bless your child! Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns. Have a blessed day!
