Communicate to my sponsored child, through a short video!

Hi. Maybe adding a way,on Compassion.com, to record a short video, of yourself talking to your sponsored child? They could see you and hear you! When it arrives in the child's country, they would add subtitles, of what you said, in the child's language! Just a thought! The video wouldn't have to be very long...maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Thank you for reading!

This would be incredible! Would DEFINITELY sway those who are on the fence of which to choose as far as sponsoring a child. I know myself, I choose Compassion over World Vision because of the online writing and being able to send the package to an office within the U.S. REALLY HOPE THIS HAPPENS!

I did receive a reply from Compassion, a few months ago. They said they would forward my idea to the appropriate people, who come up with ideas for communicating with your child; and, who make the ideas of the sponsors possible. :) I hope it works out. I think it would be awesome!

This would be an amazing way to connect with the children! In the future if we were able to send short translated videos back and forth to the children then I believe the relationship with the kids would develop far beyond anything we could achieve now. I think this is a great idea!

I think this is a great idea, however, I don't know how it could be logistically worked out. Just thinking through the number of children in the program, the number of child development centers without access to high speed internet or fast computers, not to mention reliable electricity and so on.

Here in the US, we're so used to high tech features and lightning fast applications. I can remember how long it would take to load a 2-3 minute video when we had dial-up. In reality, pulling off something like this sounds like a huge undertaking!

Let's start praying! Yes it is a huge undertaking, but with God all things are possible.

This is a super good idea. I agree with Michelle Wright about the differences in technology being an issue, but hopefully this idea can be made possible. It would definitely help to strengthen the relationship between the kids and their sponsors. I see that this topic was posted about 9 months ago, so hopefully Compassion can give us some kind of news soon!

I do agree with Michelle Wright. However perhaps it could be implamented in some projects, but not others.

Many people enjoy visiting their children. Some of us are unable to travel but would like to interact live with our sponsored children. A video phone conversation with translator would be a great service for us. Perhaps a small fee would be charged for this service.

Others have suggested exchanging short videos which would be a start in the right direction, but live option preferred; perhaps limited to once a year.

Is it possible to record videos and have them shared with our sponsored children? I've heard of other organizations doing this.

I Think this would be a great idea to be able to communicate to our sponsered child through a small video, even if it were for only 2 or 3 minutes. Many people would like to visit their sponsored child, but because of money or health issues may never be able to. I would eventually like to visit, but am not sure if and when we will be able to. This would be great so the child and sponsors can see each other and communicate for a short time. This would strengthen the bond between each & be God given. Even if a small fee were involved the benefits would be great. I hope this can happen in the near future. Looking forward with hope and excitement!!!!

This is such a wonderful idea. Because, as Michelle noted, this would be a huge undertaking to exchange videos, even just sending videos of ourselves with translated subtitles for our kids would be such a great achievement and blessing- the kids would love it SO much!!!
Great idea!!!!

The way to overcome the tech issues MIGHT be to allow sponsors to record the videos on the website, and then the Compassion folks could copy them to a DVD, perhaps bundling all the videos for a particular development center on one DVD. Most places with any computer or internet capability have access to a DVD player. Also, even a 2-3 minute video might be too long. A 1-minute video, initially, would give our children a way to see us, the subtitling chore would be lessened, and more videos could be copied to a single DVD.
One alternative might be to allow us to send the cards with the recording chip inside, so we could at least greet our children so they could hear our voices. We could, perhaps, send these to Compassion, with an extra $5 or so to cover the customs and shipping fees. That might be doable in the short term.

Amy, we are able to send the cards with the recording chips inside. On OurCompassion.org I have heard of dozens of sponsors who have done this. We're able to send anything that can fit within the requirement of document. While a recording card is bulky, it still fits the requirement!

Thanks so much for your reply! This is awesome. I was afraid the metal parts in the cards would flag them in Customs, and I certainly didn't want that to happen. Thank you again!

Just to give a little more information on cost: a CD that is valued at approximately $5 would cost between $60 and $70 to deliever through shipping, taxes and custom cost. This blew my mind when I found out from our shipping team! This is another reason why we send only 'documents' through to our country offices.

Wow. I had no idea it would cost that much to send a CD or DVD. Good grief! But honestly, if the DVD were a viable project, I'd be glad to send $10 extra to help with the costs. Still, I understand what a headache it would be. Woof!

Since you can't do a video, have you ever thought about a recordable card? We can send music or recordable cards. That would be another really fun way to say "hi" to your child in a personal way.

Is there a possibility to send video to kids? I understand they would have to be translated and approved, however, I think it would be cool to send and receive video footage. Is it possible? Or is there too much of technological gap?
