On the Compassion website, when I try to write a letter, all the child’s details and my name are there, but not a Compassion reference number. Is this because I am still a new sponsor, so don’t have a number yet? Do I need to wait to get that number before I send the letter?

Also, under the My Account details, I have ticked “receive original child letters by post”. What does this mean, please? Does it mean I receive the letters through post rather than online? If I untick it, will I get online letters only?

Thank you :)

If you get original letters via post they come untranslated and take a long time but they are the actual letters your child touched/drew on.  Compassion doesn't send them as often and mails them in batches because it costs more money for them to get them from the child's country due to international shipping but many want to have them so they do give the option but you may have to wait longer to receive them.  You'd still get a translated version online first.

You can also get letter scans via the post if you want which is not the "original" letter your child touched but one that was scanned and emailed to the USA and then printed in the USA  and mailed, or you can uncheck both and get just the online letters.

You can the online version either way but you can't receive scans and originals.

If your child is on your account you can write online immediately otherwise staff will help you get your sponsor ID number and set you up (I'm just another sponsor so can't help with that)

Hi Elizabeth! I noticed you are from England. This page is managed by Compassion USA. Regrettably, I am not able to help you with your account details. Compassion UK would be happy to help you though! They can be reached via email or phone at 01932 836490.

I can say that if you have an online account and are writing online, we automatically place the necessary information on the letter for you. There is no need to put a reference number on the letter for it to be sent.

Lastly, Teresa explained well the difference between originals and scans. I just wanted to add that the online version of letters is available with all options. You are always welcome to view letters online. However, there is also the option to only receive letters online.
