Curiosity on correspondent program

This is purely just curiosity.  I recently signed up to be a correspondent and I'm very excited to be able to write all my children. How does a child acquire a correspondent?  Does a sponsor request that their child get a correspondent?  OR does compassion see that a sponsor isn't writing then assign a correspondent? Does the sponsor know their child also has a correspondent?  I'm just very curious.  Thank you!

The sponsor requests a correspondent. Sometimes it is a "in the family" type correspondent. All the family's kids are paid for off one account, but correspondent accounts are set up for kids so each one can write to/see their own kids separately. Sometimes it is businesses. Sometimes it is someone who died but had their wills set up to continue to sponsor their kids. And sometimes it is people who don't want to write/don't feel they can do a good job writing.

I do believe Compassion will offer it as an option to a sponsor that is overwhelmed with the idea of writing but the sponsor still has to decide. Compassion does not just decide to assign a correspondent without the sponsor affirming the choice.
