I read somewhere here that CI does not register children older than age 9. Since I just began sponsoring a lovely 16-year-old girl (still waiting for my packet to arrive), I am wondering how many prior sponsors she has had. I am hoping that she won't be too wary to try to develop a relationship if she's been "passed around", so to speak from one sponsor to another. I am also curious to know if she has any siblings, although none were mentioned in her online information.

Could you tell me the same thing about my oldest two children? They write letters but they seem to have little variance and lack detail. I try to be an engaging correspondent but I still feel like I don't really know them. Also, I try to ask lots of questions when I write but rarely get specific answers.

Hi Sheila! Great questions! And thank you for sharing your concerns with us! We want to help walk you through this process and build a transformative relationship with your children.

It looks like you are an absolutely wonderful correspondent! Thank you so much for doing that! It means the world to these children and it really makes a difference in their overall confidence.

As Susan pointed out in her post, our registration only goes till age nine. This means that by the time a child reaches their teens, they have had previous sponsors. It looks like both of your older children have had between one and three previous sponsors. I have seen that it is sometimes difficult for children to open up to new sponsors when they have had several previously.

Also, some children are more shy than others and they may not feel comfortable sharing intimate details about their lives right away. I found with one of my teen girls that I had to faithfully send loving letters for about two years before she really started opening up to me. I usually recommend that sponsors underline and highlight their questions and to keep the questions simple (for example "what is your favorite color" ) until you get to know them more. If your children continue to write "form" letters and do not answer your questions, let us know and we can have a tutor work more closely with your child to help improve their letters.

I'm currently sponsoring a mid-teen with a physical disability. It would be helpful for me to know a little more about her sponsor history so that I have an idea of how to write to her going forward. In particular, were there long periods when she was waiting between sponsors? I wouldn't be surprised if she's shy or wary in her initial correspondence, and that's perfectly okay. I'd just like to get a better idea of where we're starting out.

I would love to receive this information about our older sponsored child, too! And I saw from other people's questions that you could also let me know whether my correspondent children are getting financial gifts--could you send me that information, too? I want to send them birthday gifts if they're not getting any, but if they are I'll put my money elsewhere. Thanks!

I'd like this info about my children too! I know one of my correspondent boys has gotten a small gift other than the ones I send.

Hi, I just sponsored my second child tonight (his name is Leandro) and it hasn't posted for me to see any info yet, so I don't know how much you can access from your end just yet. But when it's all set up, could you please send me any information you can about his past sponsor(s) and any financial gifts he might be receiving? He is 15 and hasn't had a sponsor in almost a year - I didn't even think about the fact that he probably had a previous sponsor. I understand why sponsors sometimes can't continue their monthly gifts, but I feel sad for the kids who don't understand why, or think that it had something to do with them.
