Do I really have a child?

I am wondering if we really have a sponsored child? The letters we send are not responded to with the reality they are being read. We just told our child of the death of a parent and there is no acknowledgement of that. We received a form like letter from her pastor with no information that made us think he even knew her personally. We want to send her a dress and we have not heard from Compassion how that might be done. We want to believe we are reaching her, but all the years we've written and sent pictures and she is still doesn't realize our age? Discouraged.

Cindy, first of all, I am deeply sorry to hear of your loss, and we pray that God covers your family in peace and comfort throughout this difficult season. I’m so sorry for the concerns you have that have caused you to doubt the integrity of Compassion and whether your child is real. Sadly, there are scam organizations out there and they have made it very difficult for organizations that are legitimately doing good work. For this reason, I encourage donors of any organization to do their research. We encourage you to look at what watchdog organizations, like Charity Navigators, say about Compassion. You may look at our financial records which are posted publicly on our website. Read the research that was done by a third-party researcher about the effectiveness of our program. If you can, travel to see what we do firsthand and meet your child. Please do research us and prayerfully consider whether this is the organization you are called to give to. That being said, please know that we are incredibly grateful for the tremendous difference you have been making in your girl’s life for the past 6 years! The impact you are making in her life is priceless!

We are so grateful that you responded to God tugging at your heart to sponsor Pacifique 6 years ago. I hear your heart for this ministry and your desire to foster a meaningful relationship with your young lady. I’m sorry to hear that you have felt discouraged by the lack of personal response and acknowledgement from Pacifique regarding your letters. When children receive their sponsor’s letters, they typically will take them home, show their family, and then put them away somewhere safe for keeping. Regrettably, many children forget to bring their letter with them on letter writing day, so they may have forgotten specific questions or information that they should acknowledge and respond to. Please know that your girl is indeed receiving and responding to your letters, and I’m sure you will receive a response to your letter about the loss in your family very soon. Due to the time it takes to receive, process, translate, and deliver letters, it may take a couple of weeks to a couple of months for a letter to be delivered. Therefore, your child may have just received the sad news and has not yet had the opportunity to process this news and respond to you. Many children feel timid or have a lack of confidence when it comes to writing. This results in letters sounding similar with generic responses sometimes, especially when responding to very sensitive news like the loss of a family member. Please keep in mind that Pacifique may not know how to respond to such sad news as her culture may handle loss very differently than we do here in America.

Each pastor in our implementing church partners is required to write a periodic update about the program and how the children are doing. Regrettably, it would require a significant amount of work for the pastor to write a personalized letter about each individual child in the program, so they do write a letter that is generalized for every sponsor of the kiddos attending their center. Please know that the pastor, program director, center staff, and volunteers truly care, love, and know each and every child in their program. Sweet Pacifique is receiving all the love and attention she needs by the amazing field staff and her mentor.

We appreciate your desire to bless your kiddo in a very tangible way by sending her a dress! Regrettably, we are not able to send packages to your child. This is for a couple of reasons. Everything we send to our country offices is declared at a customs as a document. If custom officials find anything in a box of letters that isn't a document, we are assessed a hefty fine and the box will be held for weeks, possibly months. Sadly, there is also a high incidence of theft when sending packages to the developing world, and shipping items overseas can be quite costly. Instead we encourage you to send a monetary gift. The child and family, with the assistance of church staff, will purchase what they need most. This also benefits the local economy of your sponsored child by supporting local businesses.

As Debra said, there are other fun ways to bless your kiddo too! Along with a personal letter, you can send: stickers, bookmarks, musical greeting cards, and pop-up cards. These items will be physically delivered to your child. Please keep in mind that items sent without a personal letter will not be delivered to your sponsored child. You can also send: letters, photos, postcards, greeting cards, coloring pages and paper crafts. However, your child will not receive the original items. The items will be scanned and sent electronically. The total number of items (including stationery and the letter to your child) should not be more than six sheets, and each flat paper gift item should not be larger than 8.5” x 11”. If you have any further questions about our letter writing guidelines, more information is available here. Thank you so much for blessing your sweet child with your love and support!

I cannot express how sorry I am to hear of the doubts you have about Compassion and whether your one-to-one sponsorship of Pacifique is real. We sincerely look forward to earning your trust and proving our hearts for serving our sponsors and children with excellence. Have a blessed day!
