We have been sponsoring a child in the Dominican Republic for years now and wonder about family gifts. We want to make a difference in their lives and we would need to save money to do this, the question is the cost of those things that can help them.
I have read the article online that tells about the family that was helped through gifts and that has inspired me to reach out more to her family as she is 14 now and eventually we will not be able to help this family anymore.
Our last letter brought me to tears as I have seen her grow and flourish with what seems so little. That fact that we played a part in her growth even if from afar leads me to believe there is much more we could do for her family which will also impact her.
Help us to see what is out there for them and how we can help them achieve beyond their current circumstances. I believe we have just scratched the surface.

Hi Pamela! Wow. I love your heart to help this young lady! I can tell that you are a great sponsor!

We can send anywhere between $25 and $1000 per year in family gifts. Often $25 to $100 does a great deal for families in the areas where we work. Here is a list of the costs for common items in the Dominican Republic:

Chicken                                       350 DOP
Cow                                             35,000 DOP
Goat                                            10,000 DOP
Bed sheet set                              2,000 DOP
Mattress                                      14,500 DOP
Pants                                           800 DOP
Jeans                                           700 DOP
Shirt                                             500 DOP
Shoes                                          1,200 DOP
Bicycle                                         4,000-7,000 DOP
Book                                             1,200 DOP
Food (1 month's supply)               10,000 DOP
Lamp (florescent tube)                  300 DOP
Lamp (rechargeable)                     650 DOP
Refrigerator                                   20,000 DOP
School books                                 6,000 DOP
Sewing machine                            6,000  DOP
Stove (small with oven)                 14,500 DOP
Stove (tabletop)                             3,500 DOP
Basketball                                      1,100 DOP
Soccerball                                      1,100 DOP

We recommend using the Oanda currency converter for the most up to date exchange rate from Dominican Pesos to US dollars.
