I received a letter in the mail yesterday from Compassion, that was entitled, "Final Letter to My Sponsor," but it was written by the Project Director. I didn't know what that "final letter" meant.

Cindy, I sincerely apologize for the confusion on this letter. Akumu left our program recently and this was intended to be the last letter. I also want to apologize as we normally hold letters like this until we can contact you regarding the change. I am emailing you some additional information. More information should arrive in the mail shortly as well. Please do let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I have sponsored this child for at least ten years, and was just confused when I received the final letter from the director.  I just wanted to write my own letter to Julia. I didn't want her to think that I was the one who dropped her.  The sponsorship is more than the money, it's the relationship that you build with this child over the years.

Good morning Cindy,
We truly do understand how hard it is to lose a kiddo, no matter how long you have been with them! Please know that you are more than welcome to send a final letter to Akumu, as Susan mentioned in the email she had sent. The letter that you received should have been sent to you after we were able to contact you and let you know that she had left the program. Again, we are so sorry for the confusion. Please let us know if we can help in any way!

My sponsor child in El Salvador left the program early because his family became financially stable. I was called and told about it and received a letter from the project director, not the sponsor child. I hope Compassion can get these kids to write the final letters themselves and made to understand how important that is to us. Another one in Nicaragua graduated and did not send a letter until I inquired about it and she did write one much later. I know with all the sponsors you need to contact these mistakes happen. I can overlook something like this because how heavy the workload is.

William, I can understand that you would like to hear from your sponsored children themselves in the final letters. Regrettably, it is very difficult to require a child who is no longer in our program to write a final letter, particularly if the family moved out of the area. For this reason, we permit staff to write on the child's behalf but a letter must be sent.
