I learned how to write my child's name in Thai!

My child is in Thailand so the writing there is so much different than ours I couldn't believe it. It is beautiful writing, but no comas or periods that I can see. Plus, the writing is so tiny and many curly cues. When I got a letter from my five year old child, written by his teacher or someone else, he had attempted to spell his name in his own hand. Under it was written the English letters-also written-I think, in his hand. I began searching for the combination of letters that made up his name in Thai and practiced writing it. I sent a letter with his name in Thai. Then for Christmas, I cut and painted two Christmas ornaments with his name also in the Thai lettering. I hope he is pleased to see I am trying to learn his language too. I feel like a 5 yr old wanting approval from my teacher. : )

Terri, that is so wonderful!  You can also use his name in sentences in your letters as you are writing to him in English and he will see that you did that!  I have never thought of that when I look at some of the beautiful writing from India and Ethiopia.  That is a great idea and I am sure my kids would appreciate the effort!   Thanks!

Hello Terri,
I also sponsor children in Thailand. That is so wonderful that you were able to write your child's name in Thai! I'm sure he will be very excited to see that! My 7 year old sponsored boy was very happy when I wrote his name in Thai! If you would be interested in mailing your boy some Thai books http://thai-bookshop.com/ Is a great little online Thai bookshop! I always receive excellent service every time I order books for my sponsor kids!

The rules of what you can send your kids changed about two years ago, which makes sending books much more difficult. Articles can still be sent judiciously.

Hi, Jeanna! Sarah is correct. Unfortunately, you can't send whole books to your child anymore. You can view the guidelines of what you can send here: https://www.compassion.com/letter-writing/tips-for-mailing-small-gifts.htm.

Thank you, Jennifer. I have been wanting to hook up with other sponsors to Thai children. I certainly will look into the bookshop.

What books would you suggest first? Plus, if I want to learn more Thai words and how to spell them?
