Chose a child that was my daughters age so we could grow with our compassion child Rebekah at our church in rural MO. Proudly saying that our church has 90+ sponsors for compassion kids. Anyway after writing her regularly we were not getting letters back. Then they updated her pic and mailed to me after our 1st was a different child with same name and bday. Her family size changed from having siblings to having none. Rebekah never answers any questions in our letters. Always the same message. We were told we would get annual updated pics of her and if we send a gift over 60 we would get a pic of the child and her gift....we have not recieved that. My husband thinks maybe the center in Tanzania has been hijacked and we are being taken advantage of. None of my kids are interested in their sister in Christ because the letters are so vague with the same old...i am well, my studies are good, may you live long....the girl is 12 and says in her bio on the app that handwriting is her best subject. I would expect that she could tell me her favorite food, song, etc. Nothing. We send pics...she has never commented on them. What's really going on here? Am I helping this child or am I funding an illegal organization? I don't want to end our sponsorship and be wrong. I want to help this child. But if I'm right shame on you Compassion.

First off, I want to apologize for your frustrations you have been facing regarding our organization. We want you to have a great relationship with your child, and want you to know as well what Rebeka purchases with the contributions as well.

I did take a look at the letters first and it does look like Rebeka says similar things in each letter. Sometimes, letter writing is hard for different children. They might ask the project staff leader on what to say when they do write a letter to you. The children don't always have your previous letters in front of them either. These letters are precious to them, so they may store them in a special area in their home. I do have some letter writing tips for you to have Rebeka really answer your questions. You can bold these questions, highlight them or number or bullet point the questions. This would make the questions really pop out of the letter.

Housing information does sometime change. How many siblings did it say Rebeka had before? Please let us know and we can inquire about this information.

I want to apologize for the information you received that you would get annual photos of your child. We do update each child's information along with their photos every two years, and not annually. Again, I apologize for the miscommunication. It looks like Rebeka's information was updated in July of 2017, so next year she will be due for a new update.

As for the gifts that you have sent, I did submit an inquiry over to the field office staff of Tanzania regarding the gifts you sent and Rebeka not acknowledging them in a letter. Our policy is that if you sent a gift, you should receive a letter within six months of you sending it, to receive a response from your child. I do not see that Rebeka has indicated what she purchased in any letter you received. I submitted an inquiry asking for Rebeka to write a letter to let you know what she purchased with these generous gifts you gave for all gifts but one gift you sent. You recently sent a $100 birthday gift in March, and it is too early to send an inquiry over about this. Once we hear back from the field office staff of Tanzania, we will reach out to you as quickly as we can.

I hope this clears up some frustration or confusion you were having about our ministry. We are not an illegal organization.  If you have any further questions, please let us know and we will be happy to assist you.

Mary, I just wanted to follow up and let you know that we have been in contact with our office in Tanzania. We were able to confirm with Rebecca and her family that they have received all of your gifts. Here is what your gifts were used for:
  • The gifts from January 2016 were used to purchase clothes for the child and food for the whole family
  • The gift sent February 2016 was used to purchased a school bag and clothes for Rebeka
  • The gift sent October 2016 was used to purchase school shoes for Rebeka and food for the family.
  • The gift sent March 2017 was used to purchase different types of food like rice, maize, and sugar as well as shoes for a child.
We are just waiting on the thank you letter that was requested to resolve this matter. Please do let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
