Please let me know what the specific goals are for my sponsor child, Mesfin Theshome in Ethiopia? I would like to know his progress toward those goals and when his completion date will come. He is almost 20 years old and I think it's about time he develops some self-sestanability for himself and his family. But I want to check before I cancel the sponsorship. Thank you!

Hi Stephen! I am so sorry to hear you are thinking about canceling your sponsorship for Mesfin. Theage limit of the Compassion Child Sponsorship Program varies by country, butmost sponsorship opportunities will continue up to the age of 22 to support thechild while he/she is continuing higher-level education and/or vocationaltraining. We have an estimated completion date for Mesfin of January 2020 when he turns 21 years old. It is important that everychild in the program is given the opportunity to finish this season of his orher life well and be launched into a successful adulthood. Every child isencouraged to develop plans for the future, and the last few years of sponsorship are critical in helping these precious beneficiaries successfully break out of the cycle of poverty.

Compassion does have set, age-appropriate growth goals for each child relative to their age in each of the four areas of our holistic development model. About every three years, children in Compassion's program undergo an assessment facilitated by a staff member or tutor who knows the beneficiary personally.  Mesfin's progress report on these specific goals was done in November 2017 when he was still in the age group for 15-18 year olds. The goals for this age group are:

-Can express concepts such as salvation, love and forgiveness

-Leads Bible study, prayer, and worship at the center

-Models Godly character

-Participates in community outreach

-Completed secondary education

-Develops an apprenticeship in an area of interest

-Has written goals for future

-Able to formulate business marketing plan

-Has healthy fitness levels and engages in regular physical activity

-Leads others in physical activities or sports

-Teaches others about preventing poverty related diseases

-Understands and promotes sexual purity to others

- Teaches younger students about respect and treating others with dignity

-Able to address a group of peers about a given topic

-Mediates conflict involving younger children

-Maintains supportive relationships

Mesfin was either meeting or exceeding expectations for each of these goal areas when he was assessed. Now that he is 19 years old, he is in a new age group and will have new growth goals to work towards that are age appropriate for our group of beneficiaries 19 and older. I hope this information helps as you consider whether or not to continue the sponsorship.
