My husband and I wrote our first letter to Samuel in April, and on May 2nd sent another letter and money for his birthday in June. We have received not a word back yet and I've written several letters- this is becoming very discouraging as I've read many other stories about sponsors that don't hear from thfeir children for upwards of six months. I was assured by the individuals at my church that presented this that it was a legitimate sponsorship and that we could even visit the child but I'm beginning to wonder. I even wrote a letter to his mother and letters from June are showing still "in translation". Please help.

Hi Kristy! I’m so sorry that you are feeling discouraged. I know how excited your are to begin developing a relationship with your sponsored child, and I hope that I can help to encourage you about your new sponsorship and put your mind at ease about some of your concerns. I’m another sponsor like you and I’ve been sponsoring for going on two years now. I can assure you that your sponsored boy is real and that your sponsorship means the world to him. I have exchanged many letters with my sponsored kids and have already started to get to know a lot about them. They answer my questions, talk about their family and friends, and their favorite foods and hobbies. I even know the name of our sponsored girl’s doll. The little boy that we sponsor is only six years old and he told me that he wants to be a doctor when he grows up, and he asks me to pray for his education in every letter. I really want to encourage you to hang in there because being a sponsor is as much or more of a blessing for us as it is for the kids.

The letters have slowed down a bit recently because Compassion is in the process of a major upgrade to their letter system which is why you’re seeing other sponsors asking for support regarding letters. It’s not normal to go six months without receiving a letter from your child and Compassion will do an inquiry for us to check on a child and request that they write a letter if we ever go that long without hearing from them. Currently letters still take about 2-3 months, in most cases, to travel both ways, which is the same as it has been in the past, but the new letter system is expected to greatly reduce that time frame. I also want to encourage you that many sponsors in this community go and visit with their sponsored kids and Compassion will arrange a visit for you if that’s something that you would like to do. You can get more information about that here on Compassion’s website.

I am praying that you will hear from your sponsored boy very soon. Welcome to Compassion, and thank you for choosing to bless a child with your sponsorship and for investing in him through your letters and prayers and for sending him a gift for his birthday. He will be so excited, and he is very blessed to have you as his sponsor.

Adam is exactly correct! I just wanted to post and say welcome to Compassion! We're all experiencing that letter drought right now with the new system upgrades. I remember being a first time sponsor waiting on that first letter! Hope you hear from your child soon. If it's been four months, Compassion will do am inquiry for that first letter but I'd assume it was waiting to be entered into the system like many of ours are right now.

Hi Kristy! I am always so grateful that incredible sponsors like Adam and Kristen are able to help answer your questions and calm fears with encouragement that comes from their own experiences :). I just wanted you to know that I checked on Samuel's information in our system and saw that he has written two letters to you, the introduction letter and a thank you letter for the generous gift you sent him for his birthday, that we will be processing through the system soon. I know how hard it is to wait patiently, especially when you are just starting out with your child and are waiting on his first letter! Hang in there! I can't wait for you to read his sweet words and to continue developing a relationship with him over the years :).
