Mike, I sincerely apologize for the confusion regarding Kalkidan's center. I hope to be able to clear things up for you but please do let me know if you have any further questions.

During a recent audit at Kalkidan's center, some financial concerns surfaced as their accounting and use of funds was not up to Compassion's standards. When this happens we place centers on a probation period in which we provide extra training and monitoring to bring them up to our standards of operation. Because this issue was related to finances, we made the decision to hold funds until they clean up their act. This does two things:
  1. We want to make sure that all funds are used appropriately, and don't want to send any more funding until it is used appropriately.
  2. We want to show this partner the seriousness of financial integrity.
We sent you this letter to notify you that your support is not going to your child during this time because we always want to be fully forthcoming with where your money is going. We also wanted to give you some options since your money is not going to your child right now. If you would like to stop your giving during this time, please let me know. If not, we will hold these funds until after the probationary period. We expect a resolution very soon, in the week of January 11.

I also wanted to let you know what could happen after this probationary period. Whatever happens, we will notify you of the outcome.

  1. If the center is brought up to our standards of operation, we will fully re-open the center and begin sending funds again.
  2. If the center shows progress but is still not up to our standards, we will extend the probation to work through things further.
  3. If the center continues at the same level and does not show any progress, we will be forced to close the center completely. In this case, we will try to transfer all of the children at the center to nearby centers. If we are unable to transfer Kalkidan to a nearby center, she will have to leave our program.

Hi Susan,
The deadline for Kalkidan's birthday and support is coming up soon, can you give us an update on her center?  We're not sure if we should send it or not.
Thanks

Hi Mike! We were praying for a resolution at the beginning of this month. I'm glad you posted because we actually received an update that they're extending the probation period for this project until the end of this month. This center has made significant progress in addressing the issues they were experiencing (Praise God! And thank you for your prayers during this time!). They just need additional time to complete all of the necessary changes that were made in order to ensure they're able to implement the activities again with excellence and integrity. We are very optimistic about the outcome of this probation period and the positive effects it has had on the continuation of our partnership with this church. We appreciate your patience with us!

Now, in saying this, letters are currently being distributed to the children, but gifts are not. Now, we anticipate like I said earlier, for this situation to be resolved by the end of this month. Because it takes 2-3 months for all gifts to get to your child, I personally think you'd be fine to go ahead and send your gift. However, if you'd feel more comfortable, you're also welcome to wait until we give you word that the situation has been fully resolved before you send your gift. Even if the gift is just a bit late, it will still bless your child so much to know you though of her :). Your support is current through the end of February and so we don't need another donation until March in which we're hoping this situation is resolved at that point.
