How does Compassion choose the children allowed to begin the program?

I was just wondering how the local centers actually choose children who get to receive sponsorship. Especially if there are multiple children in a family and only one child per family can be in the compassion program. Just curious...

Hi Katy! That's a great question! It definitely shows that you have thought about this and care about the effects on the family of child sponsorship. :)

Compassion works exclusively with local churches that were already ministering in the community before we partnered with them. This means that local pastors and leadership know the community and know some of the neediest families in the area. Generally, we try to register children from those families first. In many cases, just one child per family will be registered so that we can spread the benefits across several families. We also have other criteria to help us choose families and children who need the program the most. Here are some of the things that we look for:

-Both non-Christian and Christian families
-Children who may not otherwise be able to attend school
-Those who have potential to progress in school
-Children between the ages of one (1) and nine (9)
-Children having special needs like physical or mental impairments
-Cannot be registered if sponsored by another organization
-Both boys and girls, seeking gender balance or female preference
-Children with chronic illness and/or malnutrition
-Children who are orphans or living with a single parent

Obviously, any one child will not fit all of these criteria but this helps us in setting priorities for which children should be registered. You can also begin to see that sometimes one sibling might be registered over another - maybe they have special needs, are more talented in school, or maybe the other siblings were too old to be registered. Ultimately, though the sponsorship greatly benefits the whole family.

I have a question. On line, we came across an individual from India who is caring for approx. 20 children and seeking financial help. Is it possible for compassion to see if they can help them?

Hi Teila! That is very kind of you to want to help these children through Compassion's sponsorship program. Compassion works through local churches in the countries they serve and the churches actually administer the programs that Compassion provides. Please email ciinfo@us.ci.org for more information about getting these children registered into the program.
