I've heard that the waiting list for a correspondent child has about 200-300 people on it. Does anyone have an estimate for how long it should take to be paired with a child? I believe I have been on the list for about 2 weeks. I've checked my page every day and have seen no difference. I'm wondering if I'm still on the list or if there was a mistake because I have heard others saying they have been paired much quicker.

The first time I put in for a correspondent it was a matter of days. I put in for 2 more and it was maybe 1 a week? Then I put in for 5. I got 1 back in mid to late July so it's been pushing a month between him and the next one coming to me. It's my understanding from a previous question I asked that you get put on the list for your kids consecutively, more or less, so I'm thinking the wait time is pretty hefty right now. I asked to be added for 5 more after this current batch of mine goes through because I figured it'd be a real long ways off.

Hi Lindsee! I know it can be tough waiting for a new correspondent child when you are excited to get started writing to a new face. Regrettably, we cannot give you a concrete time frame for how long it will take for you to be paired with a correspondent child. It can take anywhere between a few days to several weeks, and in some cases months. It depends on several factors, including how long the list currently is, how specific your requests were, whether you currently have correspondent children that you are writing to, and how many children happen to become available for this special program at a given time. We greatly appreciate your willingness to write encouraging letters to children in need! I'm so sorry you're having to wait so long but I hope that you are paired with a child soon. :)

Susan, i was wondering why when I put in for new girls in May I have not received any, I have friends on the board who have 25 kids that are getting more kids, and I still have not and am like 298 our of 315 last time they checked. Did I do something bad by contacting and asking? I am home on disability and have lots of time and want to write more kids, I do not mind being down there I just wondered why I was after being on for three months waiting. Sorry to be a pest, but I was just wondering why I was so far down there after three months waiting.

Thanks Sweetie,
TracAn

TracAn, I am so sorry that you feel like we are being unfair with assigning correspondent children. We are really trying to be as fair as possible in assigning children, and as I mentioned to you previously, we have several rules in place, for example giving priority to sponsors who do not have any correspondent children. We do not set limits on the number of correspondent children that a sponsor can have. However, because of the nature of this free and unadvertised program, we are simply not able to assign 25 correspondent children at the same time to one person. Typically only 1-2 children become available at a time. If you ask most of the people who have 25-40 correspondent children received 1-5 children at a time over the course of several years. You did not do anything wrong, but will continue to receive children as they become available. Most likely, you will receive 1-2 children at a time until you reach your limit. You are currently at 280 out of 315 on our list.

I am sorry, do not mean to be a problem child, or a pest. Thank You for taking the time out to answer and check on things, I really appreciate all you do for us people out here. I am not upset, just was afraid I had made someone mad is why I got put so far down the list. I do not mind getting a few girls at a time, gives me a chance to get to know them first I just really do want to have more lives to invest in, being home and not able to work has been really hard on me and having the letters and stuff makes a huge difference in my life.

Right now I am working on making clothes for the girls that I am taking dolls too when we go to Honduras in Oct. so i have had a little to keep me busy. I just prayed about it before and I felt being led to at least 25 more kids, but one at a time is fine, I have not heard from Lovelie yet, I cannot wait to meet the other five when we are in Honduras with Compassion, nana surprised me to take me on the trip, and my doctor said for sure ..

Thanks again,
TracAn

TracAn, I don't think you're being a pest! We so appreciate your desire to write to and encourage children in need and really want you to be able to do so. I just wanted to explain so you know exactly what to expect. :)

I'm so glad that you're able to go to Honduras and I know that these girls will absolutely cherish the clothes that you are making and the dolls you are bringing! That is such a special gift! I hope you have a wonderful trip!

I am on the waiting list for a new little friend to write to also and wait anxiously to see who God sends to me next.  I was also wondering what the rules are since there are people who seem to have a very large number of children they are writing to.  It seems it would be a good idea to only assign one child at a time to each person on the list, especially if there are 300 waiting, giving top priority to those with a proven track record of good communication or to those who do not have a large number of children already.  It seems more reasonable to get one new little friend at a time so that everyone on the waiting list can be matched with 1 before someone else is matched with 2 or 3 or 4 or 5.  It's a wonderful thing, though, that so many people love these children and are SO anxious to become their encouragers, God's vessel of hope into their lives.  I LOVE Compassion!!!!

Hi Karen! Thank you so much for your passion for writing to children. To answer your question, the only requirement to be a correspondent is a commitment to write at least three times a year! There is not a limit to how many children any one correspondent can write to but we do take this into account when assigning children to sponsor's as they become available :).

So, if someone feels like they would like to have 3 or 4 more kids to write to, are they better off asking for that many when they ask to be put on the list, or is it better to just ask for one and then ask to be put on the list again after they get one more child?  Hope that isn't too confusing.....

Karen, it is up to you and how best you know your own capacity. We ask that you not ask for more than five children at a time, because we do want to be as fair as possible to everyone waiting for a correspondent child. However, you may want to request three or four at a time just to make sure you are on higher up on the list. Although it depends on several factors, the date that you requested is one of the factors that we look at when we are looking to place a child with a correspondent sponsor.

Also, some of our correspondent sponsors find that after they have accumulated a certain number of correspondent children that it is too much for them to keep up with them all. For this reason, I would recommend caution. New sponsors may be better off by beginning with just one correspondent child at a time so that they can get used to the letter writing. As you begin to get into the letter writing more, carefully and prayerfully consider how many children you can realistically take on.

I wish every sponsored child could be matched with the kind of enthusiastic people on these boards who are so anxious to add more children to the ones they are already writing.  There would be alot more happy, mail receiving children all over the world!!  Yes? !  :0)
I completely understand and agree with your policy to limit the # of new correspondent child requests to 5 at a time.  That is a generous amount and as you said, some might become a bit overwhelmed if they ask for too many at one time.  I have 1 financially sponsored kiddo & 2 correspondent kiddos right now and I LOVE writing them and sending them small treasures & look forward to seeing who God sends my way next.  The online tool makes it very convenient to write more than one child by simply keeping the bulk of the letter and changing small details to personalize it for each child and I also send them personal mail as well.  I really do remember how excited I was as a little girl to get mail and can only imagine how excited they must get, too.  When I get a letter from one of them, it is the highlight of my day!  God Bless Compassion!!
