Hi, Lisa! Honestly in my experience the amount and time frame depend on several different factors such as processing delays and the frequency that the child receives letters. If a sponsor writes every month or two they may receive up to six letters a year. I have quite a few kiddos where this has been the case and a few that were a little behind. I have noticed that with the new system letters are starting to flow more quickly now. I know that this is kind of a non answer, but honestly it varies kiddo to kiddo, project to project, country to country

Hi Lisa, I've been sponsoring 3 boys from Guatemala for over 3 years. Looks like I've received about 5 letters a year from each of them (I was writing weekly, but slowed down to about once a month last year). I will say, it took a while (months!) for the 1st or 2nd letters to come (especially for 2 of the kids!!), but once they started it was almost like clockwork, every 2 months. (Last year the switch to the new system interrupted the regular letters for a while.) While I've been very blessed by the regular letter from these 3 boys, I did have an experience in the past where it just seemed like an older girl from another country just did not write.

Are you getting regular letters from your child?

We have a total of 6 kids (sponsor and correspondent) and for the most part we have averaged 4-6 letters per year for the last couple of years.

It is very exciting waiting for that first precious letter! Hang in there. It will come. I have found that typically it takes almost 4 months for the first letter. If you don't hear within 4 months, the wonderful gals that moderate this forum can request an inquiry for you.

Congratulations on your sponsorship. I have been sponsoring for 2 years now. I have found that it has taken me a good year to foster a relationship with my kiddos. And now at the 2 year mark, it feels like there is a real bond. My little girl in Rwanda is now asking about my kids by name and refers to them as her siblings.

Lisa, I just sponsored a new child the beginning of Feb., and I just got my first letter a few days ago. With my first 3 sponsorships, I did not write down the date I got the first letters, but I think the first letters came within a few months, then for 2 of the kids there was a BIG gap before the second letter. After that things were regular. :-)  It has been so rewarding developing a relationship with my sponsored children. Hope you get that first letter soon!

Sarah, It will be so exciting when that first letter arrives! Yes, sometimes I have had to work on my patience too, but the reward is great.

With my correspondents included I have around 50 kids and have sponsored with Compassion almost 6 years (both financially and correspondent).  On average I'd say I get 5-6 letters a year, but there are delays sometimes.
It also depends on how much you write.

The kids have a letter writing day every 60 days and they will write IF they've gotten a letter from you in that 60 day period.  So if you write 25 letters to a kid but you write them all in January your kid will answer them all in one letter and then the next time not write, if that makes sense.  (They will write every 6 months whether you've written or not though.)

(The delays are usually in translation, so sometimes I'll go 3-4 months without hearing from a kid instead of 2, but then get two letters really close together that are dated 60 days apart still, so one just got held up in translation type thing.)

First letters usually take a bit longer, and second ones too sometimes because if your letters haven't reached them by that 60 day period they may not write, but once the flow of letters gets going it's pretty good :)
