My financial situation has changed so I'm going to be able to start sending my kids financial gifts. I plan to send each child an amount for their birthday but then also want to send a family gift at the same time. I'm struggling with knowing how much to send for a family gift. If I called in to Compassion could they tell me if the family had a specific need (home repair, medical need, item that would help generate income, etc) and how much it would take to meet that need? I'm always impressed with the amount of info you guys have on each specific kid but I don't know if that's asking too much! I also know that values vary in different parts of the world and $50 might be a fortune to one family but just a drop in the bucket for another. Any help is appreciated!

There are some lists of how much items cost in various countries if you search for your child's country and how much things cost you might have a rough idea of what your buying power is :)

Ooh! Thanks Andrea. Is that list on this site or on the main Compassion site?

On this site. For example Guatemala:

Some of them are out of date, but just typing in "how much do things cost" and your sponsored kids countries and you'll find something :)

Kristen, if you give a minimum of $60 you will get a picture of your child with the gift! I have even had families in the picture!!

Kristen, what a blessing that your financial situation has improved so greatly! God is so good and we're excited for you :).

The responses others gave on here are amazing and so I'll just answer your last question that you had! In the countries we work in, if we were to ask what your child or their family are needing right now, often times it's perceived as a promise to meet that need for your child or their family and we don't want to place that pressure or guilt on our sponsors. Although we cannot inquire about their immediate needs, I want to encourage you that when you send a gift, our staff will meet with the family and help them make a wise decision on how the gift should be used :). They will discuss their most pressing needs and then you will receive a thank you letter within 6 months, letting you know how your gift was used.

Thanks for your desire to bless your children in such a tangible way! I hope that you find the awesome responses that other sponsors gave, helpful as you decide how much you'd like to give! :)

Thanks Emily - I kind of figured that was the case but thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks to everyone for your helpful answers!
