I'm not exactly sure what I have to do to start sponsoring a child, am I required to pay by credit cards or can I make a monthly payment in cash, what does it mean if a child is in a high risk country, also how old do you have to be to sponsor a child?

MacKenna, you can pay in any number of ways, check, electronic funds transfer, credit card. I am not sure about a cash option. A child list as "high risk" is a child who lives in an area with higher risk of exploitation and abuse. I know of teenagers who sponsor kids. Some parents pay for their young kids to sponsor. As long as you have the ability to pay, I don't think there is an official age you need to be.

Compassion doesn't have an age requirement for sponsorship, however, they do like to have parental approval. Typically, on the form that you fill out, there is a box that you can check to identify as being a minor under the age of 18. I believe Compassion will send an informative DVD to your family so they understand. As for cash payments, it's not wise to mail cash. However, you can always buy a money order at your local Post Office or many convenience stores. They usually cost less than a dollar.

Hi MacKenna! We are so excited that God has given you the desire to impact the life of a child living in poverty. It is always a blessing to see how God moves in the lives of young adults and teenagers! There is no age limit to sponsor a child, although we do ask that you seek permission of your parents before choosing to make the commitment. You can sponsor a child in several different ways. Some events, like Christian concerts and church events will work with Compassion to set up tables with child packets that you can select a child to sponsor from. You can also call our office at 800-336-7676 or visit our website to sponsor a child. The website does require that you send in your first donation immediately and with a credit or debit card though. If you don't have a credit or debit card, you can always send donations in by check or money order. You can also set up donations to pull from a bank account. When I was under 18 and had no checking account or credit card, I actually gave my parents cash every month and they used their credit card to send donations to my child, which is always an option you can use too. We prefer not to receive cash donations, because they can easily get lost in the mail or credited to incorrect accounts. They take much more time to process as well.
