I had neglected to post an update because there's really not much general information coming in at this time. The updates have mostly included specific child information with which we are contacting sponsors individually. However, as you requested, here is the most recent update:

Specific child information is currently available for another eleven student centers (making a total of thirty seven student centers that we currently have specific child information on). We are calling and emailing each of these sponsors to notify them of their child's status.

As of this report, no Compassion child deaths have been reported.

Communication and transportation continues to remain difficult for all areas so the exact number of beneficiaries and student centers continues to be verified. Please continue remain patient as information is being collected during such a difficult time.

Please pray for the Lord’s protection and care for the Philippines. Please pray for all staff members who are involved in the difficult task of assessing damages throughout the affected communities.

Compassion Philippines will keep us updated as more information is available.

Susan, I am concerned as it's been some time and I have not received any promised personal contact (no email or phone called) regarding my specific child, Danilo Sobrepena who is on the island of Samar and affiliated with CRF Child Care Program, which I already know is in an area and a church center that is impacted by this typhoon. To date has Danilo and his family been accounted for by the CRF Child Care Program? Are you in contact with the directors of this CRF Child Care Program, have you had any direct contact with them yet? Has any team from Compassion in the USA been sent to these impacted child care centers to personally ascertain what is going on? Thank you!

Annette, I'm so sorry that we have made you concerned by the time that it has taken to gather information and communicate that information. You are right to be concerned about your child and that the student center is operating correctly. The safety of our children and the management of our program with integrity is something that we take very seriously.

In answer to your question, no one from the USA has been sent to our student centers in the Philippines since the Typhoon. However, several staff members from our office in Australia have. Compassion is a global organization and sending people from our office in Australia is more economical than sending people from our USA office. The Philippines country leadership and our global leadership have been monitoring carefully and are personally helping with the situation.

Each local student center is trained to respond to disasters like this and to provide assistance on their own apart from Compassion as much as they are able. The centers are already there, they already know the people in their community, and Compassion provides assistance through them. In this disaster, there were many church partners in the Philippines who provided all that was needed in home visits and relief assistance before outside teams arrived. Then we helped to develop more coordination of the efforts and worked to bring relief to those areas that did not either have the ability or the supplies that they needed.

When we say severely affected, we mean that the student center was not fully able to meet the needs in their community on their own and needed help with relief supplies and coordination. We know that the CRF Child Care Program has been providing assistance to their community through Compassion. While it's very possible that this center has been in contact with your child, we have not received official notification of her status. I'm so sorry and I wish I had more information for you right now. I hope you are able to see that we are not trying to keep information from you but are waiting to receive more specific information and will share it with you as soon as we have it.

Also, it helps me to remember that Compassion is a child development organization that works with local churches. We do not focus on disaster relief like other organizations but we do provide disaster relief to the children and families in our programs as part of long term child development through the local church.

Susan, thank you for your reply... but I do need some further clarification: when you state "We know that the CRF Child Care Program has been providing assistance to their community through Compassion. While it's very possible that this center has been in contact with your child, we have not received official notification of her status." Do you mean to say historically (prior to the typhoon) the CRF Child Care Program has been providing assistance to their community through Compassion or are you implying more recently/since the November typhoon you know the center to be active and providing assistance? So am I correct in assuming that CRF Child Care Program is still in full communication with Compassion and that you have been updated on at least some of the children from the center who have been accounted for? I received a letter once from the pastor of this center, is there any way you can convince the pastors to send an open letter via Compassion to the sponsors of their children, indicating who has been accounted for to date from the typhoon? This would ease my mind tremendously. Thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

Annette, yes, you are correct. When I said, "We know that the CRF Child Care Program has been providing assistance to their community through Compassion," I was referring to the fact that they are in contact with Compassion, have received typhoon relief supplies, and are distributing those supplies to the community right now. I'm sorry for the confusion on that. I can totally see how my statement could be a bit ambiguous since the CRF Child Care Program historically has been there and has been providing assistance. I guess the answer is both that they have been providing assistance and continue to provide assistance after the typhoon. The important fact being that they are in full contact with Compassion.

We have specific information on children from forty of the over a hundred student centers that were affected. I'm expecting specific child information from the remaining sixty or so centers any day now. Regrettably, we don't have any child specific information from PH828 or the CRF Child Care Program. Let me be clear though: We are in contact with them and are assisting them in the relief efforts. We have received general updates from this center, just not specific child information.

As far as asking the pastors to write a letter to all the sponsors, I'm not sure if that would be possible. There would be some child information security issues with sharing information on all of the children with all of the sponsors that have children at that center. Also, we have been asking the pastors to go above and beyond the call of duty for the last month. Some of them have even welcomed their church members into their own homes and are caring for those in their community around the clock. I would hate to ask one more thing of them. However, I will pass this feedback along and will see if our pastors are able to do this. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

I sincerely apologize as the number of student centers that were affected that I mentioned above is incorrect. There were actually only sixty two student centers and a total of 6,449 children from those centers were affected by Typhoon Haiyan . That's why this is such a massive effort.

Thank you, Susan! I appreciate the clarification. I am relieved to know that there has been and is continued current contact with the center and I am eagerly, prayerfully awaiting good news on Danilo and his family. The long awaited good news can finally put to rest within me the concern I've felt since that evening regarding Danilo and his family. As an Orthodox Christian it is significant for me that this is the 40th day following the destructive landfall of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda.

It is also a blessing for all of us who support CI that they are able to serve those afflicted in their community at this time. Our Lord is so good! I am still puzzled though as to why, when there is continued contact with the student center, that there has not been an effort by them to account with CI for the specific sponsored children sooner, hopefully they will send that information without much further delay. Surely they understand our concern. Susan, I do understand that the pastors are burdened with many diverse needs perhaps they can send the accounting report on the children and their families and CI USA can take care of letting each child's sponsor know specifically. Thank you so much for your communication, the Lord bless and grant you a beautiful Nativity of Christ! Merry Christmas!

Why are some people on this thread getting answered and not others ? I asked about my child 6 days ago . Not specifics, but even the area that he lives in and have been ignored. I don't understand this. Very upsetting .

Laura, I'm so sorry that you have not received an answer. I must have missed your original post. I sincerely apologize.

It looks like your sponsored child is in an area that was affected by the typhoon. However, all of the children and families from that center are fine.

Worried.

We are really worried about our child in the Phillipines, and are wondering if there is a way to find out if she, and her family are ok? There was a video about recovery, but we still haven't heard if she is ok. How do we proceed?
Please let us know! Thanks for your time,

Hi Dani! Thanks so much for your care and concern for your child! It looks like your child's student center was impacted by the typhoon but all of the children and families in the program there are fine. Your child's home was not damaged or destroyed and they are all accounted for. I'm sure this will take a huge weight off! :)

Compassion Philippines has provided the final information regarding Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the country in November.

We now have all of the information on specific children and centers that were impacted and the level of impact. We will contact you  personally if your child has been impacted. You may not get a phone call or email if either your child was affected, but didn't sustain any injuries or damages to their home or they were not affected at all. Please feel free to contact us to confirm though.

This completes the relief and recovery phases of the Philippines disaster relief. We are now shifting to rehabilitation and rebuilding phases.

In total, 6,449 children from 62 student centers were affected. As well, 11 beneficiaries from 3 Child Survival Programs were affected. 7 Leadership Development students were affected.

Please continue to praise the Lord that still no Compassion child deaths were reported.

The affected areas have received disaster relief assistance. Please continue to pray for these areas as they recover and rebuild from the disaster.

Praise the Lord for how He has cared for and protected our children, students, and families. Please continue to lift up the affected communities and pray for all staff members who continue to help these communities.

Susan,
I also have not heard anything regarding my sponsored child, John Paul Basbas (PH8260051). I saw from the list that his area was affected, but not severely affected. I am assuming since I have not received a phone call or e-mail that all is well with JP and his family, but if you could confirm that for me, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thank you!

I was curious; you mentioned no Compassion Child deaths...how are their families? Still curious about some specifics with my child, Honey (PH9640101). We received an email about Honey that was very general and says she was not severely affected by the storm, but her center is on the list for those affected (not severely affected, but affected). How were they affected? Thanks

Hi Dave! The children and families at the Genesis Child Development Center, where Honey attends, were affected. When we say "affected" we mean that this area had some significant needs and the center received and distributed disaster relief assistance from Compassion.  However, no children in our programs were impacted in this particular area. This means that they are all fine and it sounds like they were only mildly affected by this disaster. We receive specific information when a family home is damaged or destroyed or if a child has passed away. So we know that your child's home was not damaged and she is fine. Regrettably, we do not have any specific information about the families at this time. I hope this helps.

Andrea, I'm so sorry that, in reviewing the list that I had posted, PH651 is on that list as affected but it was actually not affected as of the most recent information I've received. I updated my list so that it is more accurate. Your child from PH651 is fine and was unaffected by this disaster.

However, PH956 was severely affected as you said. We have specific child information on the children from that center. Please email us at ciinfo@us.ci.org or call 800-336-7676 and we'd be happy to share this information with you personally.

In reviewing the list I had previously posted, I see that there are some student center numbers that should not be on there. I sincerely apologize for this error. I've been trying to combine a few different lists for one clear list and I see I haven't really made it all that clear. I'm so sorry about that. Here is a more accurate list of student centers that were affected and severely affected. Four months and no word on our child yet. No letters.. money continuously and faithfully sent to continue sponsorship of a child that we know is alive but nobody knows anything about her?

I notice in all your responses to individuals that your answers are always 'regrettably we don't have any information, etc......." I would love some answers.

Kresta, I'm so sorry for the frustration and the worry about your child!

We have already contacted sponsors whose children were affected by the typhoon. Praise God your child was not affected by this disaster! That's why we did not contact you. Also, we sent a letter from Mary Claire to you in the mail on March 6. I trust that you will receive this letter very soon. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. We're happy to help!

Hi, Kresta;

Sorry about your frustration; I was frustrated for a time for my sponsored child too, but received some information, though not as much detail as I would like. I would have thought everyone would have been contacted by now and that they would encourage all their children to write as soon as possible. By reading the list that Susan provided, it looks like your child was not affected (the first 3 numbers in your child's number is the number of her center). I would sugest calling or emailing Compassion (contact infor in the reply just above yours. I hope you find out soon and I will pray for you and your child.
