I have sponsored a child for over a year now and continue to get the same letter from her.

I have sent several pictures and letters to her trying to get more details about her but I continue to get the same thing. I feel like my letters aren't reaching her. Will I ever get an updated picture of the child I sponsor? Any suggestions?

Jesse, I am so sorry to hear of your concerns that have caused you to doubt whether your letters are reaching your child. Please rest assured that each and every letter you send does indeed reach your child. If there were ever a reason we were not able to send a letter, we would definitely tell you. We are so grateful that you responded to God tugging at your heart to sponsor sweet Bontu! I hear your heart for this ministry and your desire to foster a meaningful relationship with your sweet Compassion daughter.

Children under the age of 9 typically use our form letters because it is easier for them to understand the concept of writing and to fill in the blanks. I see that her letters to you have been with these cute form letters (i.e. My Medical Checkup, How I Have Fun, and My Community). Bontu has also been receiving help by her social worker, Abebe, because she cannot write on her own yet. Sadly, many children feel timid or have a lack of confidence when it comes to writing. Many children are also behind in their schooling, so they cannot write on their own yet. Please rest assured that Bontu receives your letters, and Abebe is simply writing down her answers. As Bontu gets older, you will begin to see her write her own letters without assistance. I’m so sorry that Bontu hasn’t answered your questions or commented on your pictures. When children receive their sponsor letters, they will often take them home and put them in a safe place. Regrettably, they also often forget to bring them back to the student center on letter writing day, so they forget to answer your questions. I encourage you to not give up and to keep asking your questions. We have seen many sponsors get answers to their questions by highlighting, underlining, or listing their questions out to make them very obvious :).

Compassion is currently able to provide child profile and picture updates once every 24-26 months. Since Bontu’s first picture was taken when she was registered in the program about two years ago, she just recently had her picture updated last month. You should receive her photo update in the mail very soon if you haven’t already. I’m so sorry that we are not able to provide pictures of Bontu more frequently, but we do hope to be able to increase the frequency of child updates in the future. Please know that there is never any expectations or obligations to give extra, but if your family would ever like to bless Bontu above and beyond with a child gift, birthday gift, or family gift of $60 or more, you would receive a thank you letter along with a picture of your child with her gifts about 4-6 months after the gift is given.

I cannot express how sorry I am to hear of the doubts you have about your sponsorship of Bontu. We sincerely look forward to earning your trust and proving our hearts for serving our sponsors and children with excellence. God bless you!
