I'm not staff but they probably won't answer until Monday so hope this helps.
Kids are required to write 2 letters a year if they do NOT hear from their sponsor.
However there is a letter writing day at their projects every 60 days (2 months).  The kids who have received letters within the past 60 days will write on this day.  So, if you are writing consistently, you will hear from your child approximately every 2 months. (Sometimes a bit less, say your letter takes longer to get through translation and they don't get one, then it's going to be 4 months as they wait til the next letter writing day, but if you write a lot (like I do haha) you should average around 6 letters a year from your child.   Sometimes it can take a bit longer as letters get stuck in translation and then you might get a couple at once a bit later.  If you don't hear from a child in 6 months, Compassion will check into it for you.
As far as it taking only a couple weeks last time, that's fantastic! The new system is speeding up letters a bit and your letter probably arrived right before your child's writing day which was terrific timing, but unlikely to happen every time.
