I just found out that my sponsored child's mother passed away in April. She has no father and now is being raised by her sister who is 15. My heart is broken for her and I want to know how I can help them. She says the "project" is helping them but I don't know what that means. Are these children adoptable? How do I know if her two siblings have sponsorships?

Laura, this would be such difficult news to receive as a sponsor and my heart breaks for Hirpeshi and her siblings as I cannot imagine losing your mother at such a young age. Adam made some very good points is absolutely right that your sponsorship is an even greater blessing to Hirpeshi now, knowing that she will be cared for by the center staff and surrounded by a church body that loves her deeply and will watch over she and her siblings. Depending on the resources that the center has available, they may be providing extra groceries or needed items for Hirpeshi and her siblings, and possibly helped with funeral costs for her mother. The center will often provide the child with some type of counseling if needed to help her in the grieving process.

Because our most recent update of Hirpeshi was done in February of this year, it sounds like you must have found this information out in a letter from your girl. If you're able to send us a copy of the letter you received from your girl, I can verify the passing of her mother, with our office staff in Ethiopia and ensure she's doing alright and can be properly cared for by her sister. Please email it to me at socialmedia@compassion.com and I'm happy to look further into the situation for you. God bless and I'm praying for you and your precious girl right now.
