My account is currently in my 8 year old son’s name, because we wanted him to become “pen pals” with the child we sponsor. Unfortunately, I did not think ahead about tax documents- my son’s name is on our tax documents! I need it to be either myself or, preferably, my husband’s name. Can someone please help? TIA!

Hello Angela! I am happy to assist you today!

What is your husband's name? We can list the account under either your husband, or your name or both your names. We can have the child listed on your account as the financial sponsor, and we can make your son the correspondent to the child. Please let us know what you would like the name of the financial account to be under and we can create this account for you!

Why does it have to be two separate accounts? I would actually like to have the ability for any of us to write her. My younger son, Carter, is actually Khadija’s age, but he’s not able to write letters yet. Eventually, I’d like him to be able to write her too. I guess I don’t understand why we need two accounts, and why it matters who writes to her...?

Hi Angela,
We want to ensure we are doing all we can to make the process the least confusing to your child. With that said, if you and your whole family will be writing, that is completely fine. I would suggest in that case that you just explain a little bit in each letter who is writing until the kiddo gets to know you guys a bit better. Please know that whatever the name on your account is, is the name your child will address you as in all your letters. So with all that in mind, what name would you like on the account? Have you thought about using Hanson family? This may be a way to avoid all of the confusion?

That is a great idea Shannon!
“Hanson family” it is!
I definitely have been telling Khadija that Noah’s mom, Angela, is writing, when I write. I’ve also sent family photos, but I will reiterate to her who each of us is. I might have Noah draw a picture of our family too, with “Hanson family” at the top, and each person labeled at the bottom. Sound like a plan?

Angela, I just created the Hanson Family account for you this morning and did request that we merge the account in Noah's name with the new account for the family so that all of the information is combined into one place. I'm sorry, but we aren't able to simply change the name on account. You will have a new sponsor number, 08155368, which you can use to create an online account. Once the accounts are merged, usually taking only a few days, you'll be able to see everything on the new account and write to your child from there. I bet Khadija would LOVE to receive a picture that Noah drew!

Sooo, I just received a letter from Khadija, and the name on our account was not shown as “Hanson family”... it just showed “friends”. Talk about confusing for her! I immediately wrote another letter to her, explaining who we (still) are, and sent her a photo with “Hanson family” at the top, and each of us labeled.
Why did this happen? I thought we confirmed in the conversation above that the name Khadija would see would be “Hanson family”!

Faithkitty, I am so sorry for the confusion! The preferred name we have on your account is listed as "Friends", which is what it automatically is set as when the account is under a family name or a business, etc. I did just change the preferred name to match the name on the account as Hanson Family.
