If a child is an orphan, what happens to family gifts?

One of my children is an orphan and lives at the student centre. If I were to send a family gift, would it just be the same as a regular extra gift since he doesn't have a family? Would I even be able to give a family gift?

I'm so sorry for the late reply! The child's gaurdian's and the child would receive the gift.
