Hello friends! I am heading to Rwanda in August to visit my sponsor children and I could not be more excited! Do you have any recommendation on gifts to bring and when to write and tell them that I am coming?

Any helpful ideas are welcomed!

Thank you!

Hi Jill!

That is so exciting! I'm sure you're going to have a great time! Here are some gift ideas that I typically send out to people who are either traveling on a Sponsor Tour, dropping off gifts in country, or visiting their child in country:

Gift Ideas for Children in the Child Sponsorship
Program

  • Crayons
    and markers
  • Construction paper
  • Safety
    scissors
  • Rulers
  • Glue
    sticks
  • Other
    craft/school supplies
  • Soccer
    balls (deflated, include pump)
  • Frisbees
  • Jump
    ropes
  • Volleyballs
  • Other
    sports equipment
  • Bubbles
  • Stickers
  • Hard
    candies
  • Toothbrushes
    and toothpaste
  • Hand
    sanitizer
  • Dolls
  • Games
  • Toys

*All toys for children under 3 years of age should have a diameter of at least 3 cm to prevent a choking hazard.

I do suggest not telling your children that you are coming until your trip is set in stone. The children get super excited about the possibility of meeting their sponsor and it could be a huge disappointment if for some reason you are unable to go.

Jill, I recently began sponsoring a lovely teen girl in Rwanda and am looking for anyone traveling over there who might be able to deliver a small gift to her center from me. She is at the Rukari Student Center. If it is at all do-able for you, I would love to connect with you on this. Could you please let me know? If it's not possible, I totally understand.

Thank you, Susan Austin.

Hi Susan,
I am still in the planning process. It looks like I will be meeting my sponsor children in Kigali. I am not sure how I could get a gift to her as of yet but will be in touch when I know more.

Thank you,

Jill

Thanks for responding, Jill. Kilgali is about 1 1/2 hours from where my girl is in Nyanza. Maybe somebody from CI there can help get it from Point A to Point B, but I do not want to place any burden on your whatsoever. I'm so envious of you how exciting!

Susan and Jill, I just wanted to mention that when sponsors are visiting their child's country (or another sponsors country) they have the opportunity to bring gifts with them. Unless you are meeting the child, we recommend dropping these gifts off at the country office, which in Rwanda would be in Kigali. Then the Project Facilitator will carry the gifts to the child's center and deliver them. If you are interested in this, please let us know and we can send you some instructions on how to do this.
