I am currently sponsoring a child through Compassion. Is it possible to be a correspondent to another child through Compassion? If so, is there a cost for this and am I able to write the child online?

To sign up to be a correspondent to another child, you can email socialmedia@compassion.com to get on the list. You can specify an age range, gender, country or region or just say you don't have any specific requests. There isn't a cost, just postage of the letters to Colorado. Yes, you will have the option of writing them online.
I believe the correspondence commitment is to write them 3-4 times a year including a birthday card and Christmas card. Understand that as a correspondence sponsor if the financial sponsor stops their sponsorship, you will lose the child. You will have the first chance to pick up the financial sponsorship since you have been corresponding . You will also lose the child if the financial sponsor decides they want to start writing again. I love the correspondence program and do not want to discourage you from writing. But it can be heartbreaking to lose a correspondence child because their financial sponsor has canceled their support.

Jason, I sponsor four kids and correspond with eight others. So, the answer is absolutely. As far as losing kids, that is always hard, but, you can just as easily lose a child you financially sponsor. Either they move out of the area where there is no Compassion presence, or in some cases, the family's financial position has improved, and they don't need the help anymore. There are other reasons. That being said, out of 19 kids I have either sponsored, or corresponded with, I have only had three leave the program early. The reward is much greater than the chance you might lose a child.

I currently sponsor 2 and correspond with 30. I've only lost one child before (and praying that it stays that way, I do love my kiddos!) and it was a financially sponsored child. Her parents pulled her from Compassion. I've been corresponding with kids for about 3 and a half years now and have had most of those kids (but not all) from somewhere nearer the beginning.

I feel led by God to do this! Should I call Compassion tomorrow or is there a person I can email about it?

Thanks Garry! Just wondering with all the kids you sponsor and correspond with, how do you keep it all straight?

I do ok with the number of kids I have. There are several kids that I can basically send the same letter to, more or less, due to their ages. I usually send snail mail, because I am always sending them photos, stickers, and the like. But you can write them online, which is pretty quick, and you can also duplicate those letters. As far as "keeping it straight, that is a job for me. I am not naturally "organized." I have folders for each child, and keep things more or less straight that way. I also keep notes as to what I have sent and when. There are some ladies on a FB page, that sponsor and correspond with over 50 kids. I could never pull that off. I would have more kids than I do now, if it wasn't for the "keeping them straight" issue. Start slow, a kid or two at a time, and you will know when you are at a number that you need to cut it off.

Thank you for the advice. I emailed the address you gave me on Friday of last weekend, but I think the office may have been closed due to Good Friday. I'm hoping to hear from them this week to get signed up for it.

It is Compassion Correspondents. I can, or Susan and Emily can, invite you using your email address. I am sure there are FB pages that I am not aware of. Susan and Emily, do you know of any FB pages for sponsors? I know there are some for specific student centers.

Kelli, I'm happy to add you to our private Facebook group called Compassion Correspondents. This is the group for sponsor's that Compassion has created. This group is a forum for correspondents to connect, encourage one another and share letter writing ideas. Besides this group, other sponsor's have also created their own groups but they are not managed by Compassion. For example, a fellow sponsor also created a group for sponsors and correspondents that she manages and I will send you an invite to your email for this one also, Kelli :).

Hi Emily. Are you using the gmail address? I never use that account, but I checked the spam folder and it shows nothing from you. My main email address is the one on my Compassion account. Can you use that one and resend it? Sorry for the trouble. Thanks!

Emily,
I think I have joined the group on Facebook, but not 100 % sure. Where does it show up?

Kelli, I resent the invites to your other email address :). Hopefully you receive them now!
Jason you were added, I see you on our Correspondent's page. When you are on your Facebook, go down to 'Groups' and you will be able to select the Compassion Correspondent's group. This will take you to the main page where you can meet other community members and see the conversations that are happening :).

Hi Emily, could you add me to the Compassion Correspondents FB group? Or send an invite, however that works. I am a member of another Compassion FB group, but I think that is one of the groups sent up by an individual. Thank you!

Kathy, I was unable to locate an account for you using your email address and name. Can you post your child's ID number here for me so that I can locate you? In the meantime, I sent you an invitation through the email address you have on file for Get Satisfaction.

Jason, while I was responding to you, you were actually talking on the phone to one of our representatives. Good timing! ;) Your request has been taken care of but you will still get that email from me. Please let us know if we can help you further!

Hi Jason! We received your email and I just responded to your questions. I sincerely apologize that your questions were not answered when you posted here and when you called. I also wanted to apologize for the delay in our response. We were quite busy today due to the holiday weekend. However, please let us know if we can be of any further assistance as we should be running a little quicker now. :)

I just checked my online account. I already have a child on there for the correspondence program! Thank you! My question is, his birthday is coming up in mid June, am I responsible for getting him a birthday card? I can pick something up this week while I am out. Also what's the address I should use to send it to Compassion?

Jason, I am responding to both this inquiry as well as the one you replied to from Susan yesterday. I'm so excited you received a child this quickly! Jhonatan will be so blessed by you. Because you are now his correspondent, the only letters/cards he will receive will be ones you choose to send him. I would definitely encourage sending him a birthday card as this would be a huge surprise for him. Thank you for wanting to make him feel treasured on his special day. This will be perfect timing to get him a card on time. You can send your card to the following address:
Compassion International
Colorado Springs, CO 80997
This is the full address. Please include your sponsor number and child number PE4290089 on anything you send.
You mentioned in your post yesterday that you'd be interested in more children once one child was assigned to you. Because Jhonatan was assigned to your account yesterday, would you like me to add you to the waiting list for an additional child today? Or were you wanting to write to Jhonatan for a while before adding another child?

Thank you so much for Jhonatan! Is his name pronounced Jonathan? I wrote a letter to him this morning! I was going to go to Walmart Thursday and get a birthday card for him. Do I just put his name and # on the outside of the envelope?
I would love to be on the list for more correspondent kids! I would prefer boys from ages 5 on up!
Also, I have a question regarding Kevin, my sponsor child. I want to create a bookmark for him using his first name and then make an encouraging word for each letter in his name. I can create it on my computer, but I would need help translating it. I would like to laminate it for safe keeping after it gets translated. I want to send the final laminated bookmark to him for his birthday in October. How possible is this to do?

Hi Jason! What thoughtful ideas you have for your sponsored and correspondent children! I am so glad they have you writing to and encouraging them! :) Yes, Jhonatan's name would most likely be pronounced 'Jonatan.' When sending cards, please write his name and number on the card itself. I have added you to our waiting list for another correspondent boy ages 5 or older. I think I may have responded to you in another place about your last question. Please email me at socialmedia@compassion.com with the words you would like to say on your bookmark and I will do my best to have them translated for the acrostic.
