Hi, Kari! Usually, what happens is you give a family/child gift, and the people in your child's life who are familiar with what they need the most will use your gift to buy something they really need. If the gift is $60+, you will even get to see a picture and letter telling you what was purchased! For example:

Hi Kari, Lisa-Marie is correct. The only way to know prior to giving a gift, what the family might need, is to write a letter to the child and inquire with them. Otherwise, when you make a donation in the form of a gift, the local Compassion staff will meet with the family when the gift is delivered to help them decide how the money should be spent and guide them in using the money wisely. Please be aware that Compassion will utilize a small percentage of your individual child-gift donation for the ministry's administration and program delivery costs of the gift. You will receive a thank you letter, approximately six months from when the gift was given, to let you know what was purchased.
