Hi there, I was wondering if large companies give a lump sum of money, and that ends up covering the children for their whole duration of the program? I only ask, because I am a correspondent to many children, and I wonder how many will leave the program due to sponsors not paying. I was curious if the larger companies give a sum of money.

Hi Beth and Casey!

I guess, the short answer to your question is "Yes, we have some companies and individuals who will send large sums of money," but it is much more complicated than that.

We have to be careful to maintain the confidentiality of the financial sponsors. Also, it is very difficult to predict how long a sponsor or donor will be with us. We certainly do everything we can to serve them well and maintain that relationship but we cannot say for certain that each donor will be with us for x amount of years. We do have donors who will send a large sum of money for several children over several years. Normally, these donors are individuals who want to have a lasting legacy. They may be giving stock, out of their will, or via annuity.

You may be aware that as a sponsor, you are welcome to send donations on whatever basis you would like. Many donors, companies included, will send donations on an annual basis or even several years in advance. However, I cannot say that all companies give donations for several years at a time. We do have some that like to just write a check each month, just like many individual sponsors do.

Lastly, let me clarify that children do not leave the program because their sponsor is not donating support for them. When a child is registered, we make a commitment to that child for however long they are in our program. This means that we will send the support each month whether or not they have a sponsor and whether or not their sponsor is donating. This support comes out of funds like the Unsponsored Children's Fund and the Sponsorship Plus Fund to make sure that child is covered. However, if a financial sponsor cancels that sponsorship, you may be asked to give up writing to that child so that we can reserve the letter writing relationship for the next financial sponsor.
