My sponsored child is almost 9 years old and his sister or family members are still writing letters for him. I don't feel very connected to my sponsored child and have been waiting for him to be of writing age since he was 4 yrs old.  Would you please ensure the next letters are written by my child? There should be a scanned letter on file demonstrating this and I can mail another if necessary. If he isn't going to write then I'd rather sponsor a child who will show appreciation. Thank you.

Terri, most kids don't start writing their own letters until they're 10 or 11 years old. I've sponsored several kids through the years and it has nothing to do with disrespect and everything to do with the child's confidence in writing. Most times these kids don't start school until much later than kids in the US and don't have the skills necessary to write on their own. You're actually quite lucky that your child has a sister who can write for your child, as many letters are written by project workers when the child is too young to write.

Hi Terri! Thank you so much for loving Daniel for over 4 years! I'm so sorry that Daniel hasn't started writing his own letters yet :(. I understand that this can be discouraging. Most children start writing their own letters between ages 8 and 10. The transition into writing their own letters can take some time. Some children are really nervous about writing their sponsors on their own even if they technically can. It can be hard for some to gain the confidence. They really want to please their sponsor! I have sent an inquiry to the field office to ask that he writes his next letter on his own if possible. Even if he is not able to yet, I assure you it is not because he is ungrateful. I encourage you that he is very grateful for all the love and support that you have given him! It can take about 6 to 8 weeks for us to hear back. We will be in contact with you once we hear from the field office. Thank you for being patient and understanding!

I personally think that what we expect of a child at a certain age in our own country is different than what we can expect of a child the same age in another country. I've found that a child in another country who is the same age as my own child may be socially and academically at a different level than my own child. In Central America, the children I've sponsored seem to be at a younger level that I see in my own child.

You have sponsored your child a long time, and I think that commitment means so much to sponsored children! It must be a big encouragement to the child! Hopefully your child will be able to write their own letters soon.
