I wrote to my sponsor child twice.. the first time about a month ago and the second about 3 weeks ago. He lives in South America when should I expect a response. Also I was reading that some people received a pre-written letter from their sponsor child before they were sponsored and it was sent out to the family once they were sponsored.. Does everyone get one?

I am a new sponsor and I have not received a pre-written letter and I would like to ask that question also. My sponsor child lives in Africa and I was told it would take up to three months for her to receive a letter from me.Three more for me to get a reply, a pre written letter would be nice.

Jana, welcome to the Compassion Family! After reviewing your account, I see that you just began sponsoring with us on August 26th. Because you are both the financial sponsor and the correspondent for this child, you can certainly look forward to receiving an introductory letter from Aneth! Thank you for your patience and I hope that you get this in the mail very soon! If you don't get this by December 26th, please let us know and we can send an inquiry to our field office requesting this letter. In the meantime, you're welcome to continue writing letters to your girl and she will respond once she receives them.

If the child is a financially sponsored child, you can inquire to Compassion after 4 months without receiving a first letter from them.  If they are a correspondent child, it is 6 months.  Whether or not any letters you get before then are replies to what you wrote though, or just an introduction letter they wrote to you before receiving your first letter, varies greatly depending on the project, how long translation took, and basically your luck with timing the post.
I have quite a few kids and I have received first letters 2 weeks after receiving a new child (these were always intro, never replies) up to 8 months after receiving the new child.  On average, I'd say it's between 4-6 months before I get letters that are replies to what I actually wrote, but it can definitely vary greatly!
As for the pre-written letters, I've had them with about half of my kids.  Sometimes if they had a previous sponsor the prewritten letter was already sent to that sponsor and they have to re-write it, so it's not written ahead of time.  Especially if they were dropped by the previous sponsor and you picked them up shortly after so there wasn't time in between to have another letter written and on file.  Also, I'm not sure if it's something every project does or not yet.
For a correspondent child, the pre-writtens are sometimes sent to the financial sponsor before they are signed up for a correspondent.  (Other times, depending on how long it takes the financial sponsor to sign them up, you're first letter will be addressed to the financial sponsor even as it's re-routed to you)

I'm not upset about when I get my letters because they do come just commenting on that when they date them it's month in half later. I would just love to have an updated picture of him. That's all!

You mean the date is a month and a half after they are written? If so, maybe the translator is writing the dates on them for the date they are translated?
Yes, updated pictures are great!  You'll automatically get one soon though :) They update every 2 years (actually a lot of mine update early even, they CAN update after a year and a half, but by two years you can really start expecting it.)  Note: Keep checking your online account :) They update online first and it's sometimes several weeks (I've even had 3 months later) that they come in the mail as the info updates slower.
PS: If you're interested, we have an online forum for sponsors who love to write to their kids and get letters etc :) It's located here: http://childsponsorship.boards.net/  (There's more boards to see after you register)

Thanks I'm happy to hear my updated picture will soon be coming regardless if it comes mail or online. Now, to clear up what I'm saying about my child letters is this....I recd several which I'm thrilled with however for example if I got one today September 8,on my letter it would be dated July??, 2014. That is what I meant. Why is that? Because I know or can only hope my sponsors son is getting all my letters and pictures I've sent him. ?? Thanks

Sharon :) That means that it was written in July.  It takes that long for the letter to be processed.  First it's sent for translation, then it's processed in the child's country, mailed to the USA, processed in Colorado, then mailed to you.  It all takes time and it'd done through "Snail Mail" which is appropriately named :)  SO that would mean the child wrote the letter in July, you get it in September.  It takes both ways, which is why we are encouraged to start sending Christmas Cards to our kids now, to make sure they get them by Christmas, and to send birthday cards 3 months before a birthday :) The child will receive everything you send, but it will be 3-4 months after you send it.  Then by the time their reply is processed it will be 4-6 months.  It's slow, but it'll arrive :)

Hope that makes sense :)
There's a couple great videos about the process a letter takes to arrive to your sponsor child and about your child's letter getting to you :)

Hi Madison! Thank you so much for sponsoring Josue and for already writing him two letters! I am so excited that he is being sponsored by you and I just know you will be a huge blessing to him through your letters! I have good news for you; an introductory letter is in processing from Josue and you will be receiving this letter in the mail soon! In regards to the letters you sent to him, it takes 2-3 months for letters to be delivered both ways. You can expect to receive a response to your first letter sometime in February if not sooner. You can write as often as you would like and once he catches up to the letters you have been writing, you should begin to receive them more frequently. Happy writing and please let me know if you have any other questions we can answer for you as you begin this new journey!
