I am another sponsor, and will let the ladies answer this officially. Names are often tricky. I had a girl in Colombia, that I knew as Yulimar for the 12 years I sponsored her. The year she graduated, I visited her, and noticed something in her home with her name spelled Yolimar. I asked her about it, and the Yo was correct. Kids of Spanish descent will not correct you, so for 12 years, I was spelling her name wrong. I have a girl in Kenya whose name(s) were like you are mentioning. It took over a year to get a response from her as to what she preferred to be called.

Hi Debra! Typically we ask that you try to send your gift about 2-3 months prior to the child's birthday. We need this amount of time because it is quite a process to get your money transferred to the child's center, exchange it to their currency, sit down with the family to decide what to buy, and then to go get the gift. However, we completely understand that you are brand new to this and did not have the time to send the gift that early. I would encourage you to send your gift anyways, even though we know it will be late, as your child will feel so blessed by you even if the gift arrives a bit late. :) Please let us know if you need any help processing your gift!

Go ahead and send a gift. But if her birthday is August 1, it won't likely get there exactly on the birthday. They recommend 2-3 months ahead. The next Birthday I am sending a monetary gift to is November 30  and I'm planning to send the gift mid-September.  But it is okay if the gift does not get there exactly on the day of their birthday. It will still be appreciated.  Also, note: It takes a while to get a thank you.  I sent a gift last February for an April birthday and have not heard back about it yet.  You have to wait 6 months to inquire so I still have a few more weeks to wait (I'm pretty sure it was early February -- so early August) until I can ask about it.

Thank you Shannon yes it was impossible for me to start that early as I jus became my girls sponsor on the 23rd yes I will still be sending her the money for the gift her family and the center pick what it needed, or wanted. Even though she will be receiving it late will they let her know it was supposed to be for her birthday?

Hi Debra! Wow, you have the most precious little girl! Her first name is Cleiri Moserrat, but sometimes kiddos go by other names much like we give kids nicknames in the United States. Yimelis is what she actually goes by and what I would recommend you call her in your letters unless she asks you to call her Cleiri. You can always ask her where she got the name Yielis as well. It's always fun to hear how they got their names!

Hello sarah, thank you so much for the info yes I do have a precious little girl, So adorable... I wrote her a letter already in which I did call her Cleiri but will address the next one diffently now that I know it is her nickname an I will be sure to ask her of how she got it. I am so excited and happy to get to know her and all about her schooling famly, and culture. I am so happy to experience this. I told my bestfriend as my children move out I will sponsor another childe so within the next ten years or so I will be up to 4 children. I can't change the whole world but I can change the life of a child ; )
