My sponsor child ask me to pray for his parents, they are separated. He is 14.  He ask if I was married and how many children I have. I have sent him a letter that included a picture of myself and my daughters. Which I know he had not received yet when he wrote his letter.  I am not married but I never mention that in my letters to my children. I just talk about me and my daughters.  This is how I am planning to respond.....

" I will be praying for your family, I know it is hard to see your parents separated.  I am not married anymore. Payton and Ellie live with me and go to visit their dad every week. Their dad is remarried now and they have a step-brother Noel that is 13 that lives in Texas and a step-sister that is 18 who lives in Canada."

Do you guys think that this is ok? Any suggestions?

Hi Casey!

I appreciate your concern and sensitivity with this issue. While I am sorry that you have had to go through such a painful experience in your personal life, I believe that this may be a wonderful opportunity for you to connect with your child because you understand things that other sponsors may not. Perhaps God has made you this young man's sponsor for such a time as this.

I think that you have done an excellent job of explaining your complex situation in the same way that you would to your daughters. We understand that families can be complicated, especially blended families, and many of the children in our programs have these same experiences within their own families. You have the unique opportunity to speak hope and life into that situation that your sponsored child is in. I definitely think that this would be alright to send to your sponsored child.

Susan,

Yes, I think maybe that God has sent him to me:) Thank you, I have a great relationship with their dad and their stepmom. Maybe I can get their stepbrother involved in writing to him too, he is almost the same age.  I am grateful that God has given me this opportunity to connect with him. Thank you for your encouragement!!
