So, is there no children available and a long waiting list?

The need changes daily. Very rarely do we have a large amount of children available to correspond with. On average, you will wait 6-8 weeks to be assigned a correspondent child after being added to the waiting list.

Do the children enjoy correspondence sponsors or is it weird for them and rubs the fact in that their sponsor doesn't write? I want to understand this more and understand the importance of it. Sorry for all my questions!

No, children love their correspondence sponsors! They love receiving letters and knowing that someone across the world is praying for them and encouraging them.

Do they get told that they have a sponsor paying for them and a correspondent sponsor or do they think this is both the same person? Thank you (:

I would like to know does a sponsor have to say they do not want to correspond for a child to get a correspondence sponsor? I did not understand the importance of corresponding in the beginning so Keytlin did not get regular letters from us. If I had not stumbled onto the this web site and our compassion etc I would not have understood the importance. Would compassion have stepped in and matched her with a correspondent sponsor since I was dropping the ball? I feel that there is a bit of a disconnect between the two parts in the beginning. There is not enough information given in the beginning about how important the letters are.

Actually, you must ask Compassion to assign your child a correspondent. I am soo glad that you are writing to your little girl, though. Keytlin will love to get to know you and will treasure your letters :)

Thank you Lizzie for answering. I just wondered if Compassion took note of the kids not getting letters and matched them with someone after a period of time.

When a sponsor asks Compassion to assign a correspondent to their child, can they still write occasionally if they want to or is the correspondent the only one that can then write?
Thanks- I was just wondering

No, when a sponsor asks for a correspondent child to be assigned, the sponsor is no longer able to write to the child. However, the sponsor can choose to cancel the correspondent and write on their own at any time.

Does the sponsor give the child special gifts for their birthday, Christmas, and other special events? Can a correspondent give special money gifts to the child?

It depends on the sponsor whether kids get extra gifts or not. I have several correspondent kids and a couple of them get birthday gifts etc from their sponsors but the rest do not. As a correspondent you can also send monetary gifts to the kids though. There is not an online option like with sponsored kids, but if you call Compassion, they will set up the gift for you.

Will I know if the children that I correspond with get special gifts? If not is there a way to figure that out?

You can ask Compassion if the child has received gifts from their sponsor in the past and they may or may not tell you. The only other way to know is to see if you get a thank-you letter for a gift that you didn't send. For that reason, I don't usually give birthday gifts the first year I correspond with a child so that I can see if their sponsor sends one then will plan accordingly for the next year.
