I was looking back a some of my child's letters, and was confused by something she wrote. She said "for end of year we made my uncle as a dummy and we burnt it, it was enjoyable."
at first I thought maybe her uncle had died, but "enjoyable" typically doesn't describe a funeral.. The next year she wrote, "on New Year's eve we burned a puppet with my dad's face. What do you do for Christmas and New years eve?"
This cleared things up a bit.. but I still have no idea why they burn representations of family members. She lives in Ecuador and I was wondering if anyone new what this tradition is and could explain it to me?
