I'm curious why the Compassion websites of some countries have a lot of children, and others seem to have very few. Do some partner countries just not have very many sponsors, or does it have something to do with the way children are divided up among countries to find sponsors?

Hi Sharon! Compassion USA has the most sponsors of any country and thus we will have the most variety and availability on the web. This is the primary reason that some countries have many children on the web while others have less. It also depends on how many children we have available for sponsorship at the time and so we have to ensure each country has enough children on the web, events, and in house for the number of anticipated sponsors for each country. Children get sponsored on the website very quickly so we do our best to have children available from each country on the websites for each of our partner countries, whenever we're able to :).

Just as an example, here in the USA, we add between 700-1,000 children to the web weekly, with the overall goal of having between 2,000-3,000 kids on the site at any time.

Thanks Emily! So does each partner country decide how many children they'll feature on their site at one time, or does Compassion USA assign them a quota or something?

Sharon, yes, our Global Marketing team assigns a quota to each Partner Country based on projections of sponsorships.

There are 10x LESS people in Canada (where I live) than over in the USA, so I would imagine that's about 10x less sponsors too.  If there were too many kids on our website some would wait a REALLY long time for a child.

If you see a kid on a different country's website you want to sponsor though, you still can and they can be transferred to your own country's branch of Compassion :D  I'm in Canada with limited child selection but I sponsored 3 kids off the USA website and had them transferred to my Canadian account so the funds would be Canadian :)
