Names are so different around the world, and it's hard to keep track. It would be wonderful to have the child's preferred name printed on letters, along with their more official one. It's more of a challenge to keep them straight when the preferred name (e.g., "Sara") is so different from any part of the formal name, like I've experienced with children in Thailand and Indonesia.

It does seem like this could be complicated on Compassion's end, especially with names sometimes changing for various reasons. Another option would be adding a line at the bottom of child letter templates to write in the child's name at the end of each letter. (With younger ones who have tutors helping them write, the child's preferred name sometimes isn't on the letter anywhere.)

In the meantime, I still ask about preferred name when it's not clear. But even then, I might be six letters into the relationship before I hear back about the name question, and it's still hard for me to keep straight. (This admittedly might be my own failing...)

Hello Debi, Thank you for your suggestion with the preferred names. I completely understand where your confusion would come from, and I apologize! The child's preferred name should always be on the initial Welcome Booklet you receive, and if you ever have a question about a child's preferred name, you are welcome to give us a call, as well. That should get the answer to you quicker!
