Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

I have been thinking for a while that this is something that's been missing from this site. Jesus said, "if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 18:19) The Bible also says, "you do not have because you do not ask." (James 4:2) We are gathered together in Jesus' name so lets not let it be said of us that we didn't have because we didn't ask. I hope that this can be a place that we can "pray for one another" (James 5:16) and "encourage one another and build up one another." (1 Thessalonians 5:11) I hope that some others here would be willing to follow this post so that if anyone here has a request for themselves or for one of their sponsored children we can come alongside them and pray for them.

Prayer is THE best thing we have, but, me, personally, not comfortable sharing prayer requests on such a public site, unless it's very general.  Even within the closed fb groups that we have for sponsors, Compassion has asked us not to share details about our kids.  Many, if not most of my older kids are on fb and so obviously on the internet, and it's not good to share  personal things about them that they might have the chance to see on here.

FB is global with well over 500 million users. Many areas don't have internet and in the areas the internet is not as dependable as it is here in the U.S.

Hey Adam.Great idea.Let's see how this works out.

Angelee, we are not allowed to have contact with our kids in any way other than through letters through Compassion (or I guess visits with Compassions approval), until they graduate, and at that time, you can sign a form saying that you want contact with them via fb, or email.  The kids and parents are told about this, but still the kids, will, at times, contact us through fb.  We are not to accept any friend requests from them or members of their family while they are in the program.  Most of the kids have access at schools, or have cellphones (minutes are dirt cheap everywhere).

I didn't realize that it was against the rules to share details about our kids and I apologize. I hope that my post can be edited to omit the part about sharing prayer requests for the kids and leave this post up just for the sponsors. We should obey this rule that Compassion has put in place and leave sharing prayer requests for the kids publicly to the Compassion prayer calendar.

But as for me, I don't mind asking everyone on this site, and everyone else who will, to pray for me. Not all that long ago I was an alcoholic. Then, the Lord Jesus came into my life and turned it upside down and He has turned beer money into sponsorship money. Now I spend my time with my family and reading my Bible and writing letters, coloring pictures, and making paper bracelets for an amazing kid in Colombia and it is so much more fulfilling than anything I've ever had before. I have so much joy in my life now, but just because someone is a Christian doesn't mean life isn't hard sometimes. It doesn't mean we don't get discouraged. I am constantly discouraged and the more I try to live for Jesus the harder it gets. Sometimes the only thing that gets me through the day is prayer. So I'll be the first one on here to ask everyone to pray for me because as far as I know, not very many people are. There are a lot of sponsors on this site with stories of how they are struggling with their sponsorships for all kinds of different reasons and I'm sure many of them are Christians. So I just think that we should try to support each other with prayer and encouragement as much as possible, not just as fellow sponsors, but as the church, and if any of the other sponsors on here have a prayer request I would love to pray for them.

Please pray for me that I won't get so discouraged and that I will know that God is for me and not against me.

Adam,

We all have our struggles.  Big and Small!  But, you have to remember God IS love, and "He is our ever present Help in time of need." Psa 46:1B

I am praying for you and remember "You can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens you! Philippians 4:13

Have a great night, and you Compassion Kids are so blessed to have you!

Good morning, Adam!

I admire your humility and vulnerability in sharing your story and asking for prayer. Please know that if you ever have specific prayer requests, you can email us at socialmedia@compassion.com and we can share it with our prayer ministry team. Here at Compassion's headquarters, we pray for our sponsors and children weekly. You are all such an important part of this ministry and you're completely right, as the body of Christ we are blessed to be able to walk along side each other and hold one another up in prayer. We serve an amazing God and prayer is powerful!

Just to clarify, if you have general prayer requests about your sponsored child, please know that we love praying for our children. It's not against guidelines to share prayer requests for your children; we just ask that you use discretion when posting information about your child and prayerfully consider what you post about them on public forums. Many children discuss very sensitive or private situations in their letters and as Debbie mentioned, because social media is accessible to many of our children, they may not want those details shared on social sites.

I think of it as if I shared something very personal about my family or life with someone very close to me. I entrusted that information to them and told them in confidence and may not want that information disclosed in a public setting. If you post here to say, 'Please be keeping my child in prayer as his/her family is going through a difficult time right now,' or 'please be praying for my child's health as they are sick right now,' this is certainly fine and we would love to be praying with you! :)

I'm just now reading this but wanted to reply.  I really appreciate you sharing about formerly being an alcoholic.  My husband is/was also an alcoholic, although we are doing much better than we were 2-3 years ago.  When we met and married, he was living a sober, Christian lifestyle, but then he relapsed after we'd been married for a year.  That was about 3 years ago.  He was out of work about a year due to his drinking and also put us into quite a bit of financial debt.  I'm sorry to say this was a big struggle for me, and unfortunately I thought less and less about my sponsored girls, and also wrote less too, which I feel horrible about.  There were a few months when Compassion paid my monthly child support for me, for which I'm very grateful!  And they prayed for us too!  By God's grace, though, my husband is doing much better than he had been.  He's kept a steady job for a year now, and financially God has really started to bless us (not that that is the end goal, but it has enabled me to take on 2 more sponsored girls).  Anyway, you are right, prayer is so important!  I have started writing a lot more and thinking about my girls on a more regular basis. And praying for them too!

Hi Anne, I'm sorry to hear about the struggle that you and your husband have had. I'm so glad to hear things are getting better. My wife and I got married when we were 19 and we've been married almost 11 years now. We've been through a lot together. I started drinking in college because all my friends were doing it and over the years it just got worse and worse and kind of became the way I dealt with things. I was able to keep a job and live a pretty normal life, but I was drinking so much on nights and weekends that I probably would have died from it if I hadn't quit. Not a whole lot of people know I was drinking that much, at least I don't think. I was/am ashamed of it and tried to hide it. I don't mind talking about it now because maybe it will help someone else. I've struggled with this and still do, but I actually think I was a Christian during those years. I just wasn't walking with God and I was miserable. I feel like maybe it was God's discipline that helped me quit. Looking back it's easy for me to see how selfish I was. I drank because I felt sorry for myself that things weren't going how I wanted them to in life. I tried to quit a few times and couldn't. What finally helped me is that, by God's grace, I came to a point in my life that I realized my life wasn't about me and I started trying to live for Jesus and to serve others instead of focusing on my own happiness. I started praying and reading my Bible constantly, listening to Christian music all the time, and taking my family to church. The more good things I put into my life the less I wanted to go back into that old lifestyle, and the more things I did to serve others the more joyful I felt myself. Sponsoring with Compassion has been such a  blessing and I know I've been more blessed by it than my sponsored kids. One thing I would encourage your husband to do is just to surround himself with people who love Jesus and will be a positive influence in his life. I prayed for months that God would bring Christian friends into my life. None of us were meant to face this life alone. Even it we know that God is always with us sometimes we need encouragement from other Christians to get us through at times. I'm glad to hear that you stood by your husband. God bless you for doing that. My wife is so wonderful and I'm so thankful for her. She's the most amazing person and I don't deserve her. I'm so blessed to have a wife like her. I still have a long way to go but God has really blessed our marriage and it's stronger than ever now. I will be praying for you and your husband. It sounds like you're a great sponsor. Compassion has prayed for me too. Everyone there is amazing. I say that a lot because it really is true.

Hello everyone! I would just like to ask for prayer for my Compassion event I'm having at my church on August 2 this year! We are a small church but I know God can use this for His glory. I will be the one speaking and presenting this awesome opportunity to my church family. Thank you! :)

Thank you both, Adam and Kristen! I appreciate that very much! I was assigned 5 boys and 5 girls for the event and yesterday 4 were sponsored, one of them by my family! I have a couple more people that are praying about sponsoring that will get back to me! Praise God! :)

Barb, I'm so very sorry to hear that your husband has lost his job. I merged your prayer request into this conversation thread as it was created for this community to be in prayer for one another. I'm also praying for your family that your husband would find a job very soon and that God would not only provide for your family financially during this time, but that you would be showered with his joy and peace in knowing he will take care of you.

Hi Barb, it's really encouraging that your first reaction to this was to ask for prayer instead of asking to cancel your sponsorship. Back in 2012 I was unemployed for a few months. I tried to start a business that didn't work out and then I applied for several jobs that I didn't get. I didn't know what else I was going to do. I was afraid we were going to lose our house and I pretty much just sat at home and worried for several weeks. Then I started praying like I've never prayed in my life and a few weeks later someone called me up out of the blue and asked me to come in for an interview. One of my old bosses at the accounting firm I worked at out of college ran into a client at Walmart and they asked them if they knew of anyone looking for an accounting job and my old boss gave them my phone number. I got the job the next day. God really does have everything under control and He is faithful to provide for us if we trust Him. I know it's easy to say don't worry about it, but it's so hard to do. I'll be praying for your husband to find another job and that God will bless you and provide for all your needs and give you and your family peace during this difficult time.

Please pray for me as soon as you read this - I'm asking for prayer of protection over my life. Specially that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, that no evil intent be taken against me & that a deep abiding hedge of protection be placed around me at all times plus a legion of good angels. Thank you for praying for me - God bless you .

Catherine, I just said a prayer for you. I sent this verse to my sponsored kids with last week's letters, and I thought it might be encouraging for you.

"Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken." Psalm 55:22 NASB

God bless you.

Will you all please pray for me? I'm an alcoholic and I relapsed at the end of last year for a little while and I'm in Celebrate Recovery now. Some days I don't even know why I don't drink, I just don't but I got this verse in my email this morning from K-LOVE that was really encouraging. "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him." Philippians 2:13 Some days it's still really hard though and the past few weeks have been kind of tough so I would be very grateful if you all would please pray that I will keep making good choices for my family and my sponsored kids.

Adam - I first want to applaud your bravery and honesty! What you are doing is soooo hard, and I applaud your strength and openness!

Look deep within and see what triggered the relapse, learn from it, and make any necessary changes. Adam, I want you to understand it is not about making good or bad choices. Alcoholism is a disease, an illness that can go into remission, but never fully goes away.

When we are in our most vulnerable states, that's when God is closest so draw on Him for strength, help, love, and support. Trust in His plan for you.

Alcoholism can break you, define you, or strengthen you. I am praying it strengthens you and you are able to help others based on your personal experiences.

I will definitely pray for you Adam! You are awesome! God's got this if you give it over to Him.

Psalm 121:1-2 “I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (NIV)

2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (NIV)

Isaiah 41:10
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (NLT)

Keeli, I broke down crying when I read your post because just before you posted this I had prayed that Jesus would show me that He was with me and that He would be as real as the alcohol. Alcoholism runs in my family, and some of my relatives have died from it. Some days are really bad and it's all I can think about from the time I wake up, and today was a really hard day but this is so encouraging. I am going to keep this and take everything you said to heart, and I will probably read it every day. Thank you so much for your encouragement. Thank you all so much. I'm so thankful for this community.

Adam - I promise you God's got this. Just open your heart to Him and pray to Him to take this disease from you. Tell Him you are handing it over to Him. I also promise that at some point in your future, you will look back, and understand what God was trying to teach you, mold you, or prepare you for. While He takes us down some crazy and difficult paths in life, He only works for our good. Don't ever forget that. I believe in you. I have faith God will take this burden from you.

Dear Adam - I'm sorry to hear you relapsed again.  But, it happens.  The trick is through Christ strength picking yourself up and wiping off the dirt and moving forward.  I'm not making light of your alcoholism.  Far from it.  I have a good clue what you could lose... everything...  and each time getting up is harder than the last time.  I get it.  I have several mental illness.  Bi-Polar Type 2, PTSD, and Anxiety Disorder.  Every day is a struggle for me just to get out of bed, but God is there and he helps me.  I'm not super spiritual... Not close, but I know God loves me and at my greatest challenges I'm not alone.  He is my ever present help in time of need!  I will pray for you Adam, but would you pray for me too?  Thanks for reading this.  Hope it helps!

Angelee, thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. It gives me a lot of strength and courage when I hear about others who are overcoming their own struggles and I admire your strength and I appreciate you sharing this. I think the reason that I relapsed this time and and reason that I've never been able to quit in the past is because I was trying to do it all on my own without getting help from others, and without really giving my struggles over to Christ and asking Him to take them from me. I'm still learning how to do that, and going to Celebrate Recovery has really helped me with that. Thank you for your praying for me, Angelee, and I will absolutely be praying for you too and I'm honored that you would ask.

Adam. Just ask God to give you such a hatred for alcohol. I know I do mainly because of what it cost me and seeing my 1st cousin and her son die because of it. I've been in a season of restoration these past 11 and a half years. What it all cost me God is giving back to me.

Adam, your mention about prayer has remind me of something. I myself do not usually pray or pray on purpose but rather I just believe in my heart that whatever I hope for, think for, desires for, has already been considered prayed. And I will leave the rest up to GOD'S plan. HE hears our hearts requests very well and has already know what I am going to ask before I even ask. And sometimes, out of no where, I just hear a voice to ask me to pray and thank GOD for everything just like what happened last night to me. Then sometimes I hear a voice to pray for specific people, yes, even people who persecutes or least seem to be even approachable. It is like a spirit is linking me back to GOD and I just do so willingly and gladly. And it is rather funny because it is like GOD wants me reconnect to HIMSELF and strangely enough that even bowing down to HIM is such a rejoiceful act of willingness.

Hi, everyone! My family and I are in need of prayers. We have hit a rough spot financially due to some unexpected bills and the fact that we really need God to send us a buyer for our old home. We moved 350 miles for a job opportunity last year; things have gone well until now but rent and mortgage are beginning to make things beyond tight. Please pray for God to provide us a buyer and for me to have some clarity about a job decision I have to make. We love our Compassion kiddos and are praying hard that we can keep supporting. Please pray for us! Thank you and God bless!

Hi Heather. Wow, it sounds like you really have a lot going on right now. I know how scary and uncertain it can feel when things aren't settled and finances are tight. I will be praying for you and your family. If I may, I also wanted to share this verse to try to help encourage you:

"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

Maybe sometime if you get a chance you can listen to the song Oceans by Hillsong United. I used to listen to that song over and over a couple of years ago when I was going through a really hard time. I think that song and that verse go together. God sees everything that you're going through and it might not make sense right now, but He is working all things for your good in 10,000 different ways right now. I just want to encourage you to give everything over to Him and keep trusting in Him. He promises to take care of our needs if we will trust Him and and seek His kingdom first. God bless you, and thank you for always being so encouraging!
