Question for all you Correspondent Sponsors

I am a correspondent for a 7 year old boy in Burkina Faso, and I recently found out that I’m his fourth correspondent in the two years since his financial sponsorship begun — it breaks my heart to think of him not having the consistency or the time to build a solid friendship with his correspondent, and due to his young age I expect this could be especially confusing for him. Has anyone else had a correspondent child who had many other correspondents before you? Is this frequent that correspondent children end up going through a line of correspondents? How did you start to develop stability with a child that has had many sponsors/correspondents?

Secondly, I’ve heard of many correspondence children who were dropped financially. Is this frequent, or do most children stay in the program for a longer amount of time? Curious to hear your experiences! I really hope to be a source of stable encouragement in this child’s life. :)

I am also a correspondent for many children. I have been for about 4 years. As to your first question, I have not had that experience with my children.

Regarding your question about financial sponsor ending, I have about 30 kids, 20 or so have been with me since I started with them. The other 10 I have received a call from Compassion saying that their financial sponsor had to end the sponsorship for one reason or another. They would always ask me if I can take the sponsorship. I would not be able to so they put them out to find a new sponsorship. I would always have them put me back on the correspondent waiting list for a new child.

I would consider fourth correspondent in two years an oddity. The commitment for being a correspondent is 3 letters a year, so it would take at least a year before Compassion would have an inkling that a correspondent was not doing their part.  I do have children who had correspondents before. But they have been in the program longer and it is usually due to a financial dropping.   I have picked up one of my correspondents whose financial sponsor dropped. But others I have been unable to do that with.

Hi Anna, thank you so much! I do have one more question. With a child who has had so many correspondents in such a short period of time, are there ways you recommend I be sensitive to that? Should I just be consistent and rely on time to build trust? Or is there something else I can do?
